How long do you give a buyer to pay before raising a case?

Although I am a seasoned ebay buyer, have only sold a few things over the years, and it seems that recently I'm getting winning bids from buyers who just go quiet and don't pay.

How long should you give them to pay (with invoices and nice, firm but polite email reminders of course) before opening a case?

2 days am afraid - no point in waiting I reckon.

Thanks Lily. I've raised one.

Erm... Can someone talk me through what I need to do now? Slowly?

Do I relist or offer as a second chance to other bidders?

This has now happened with another item... Is this really worth it?

It seems to be really common now. No idea why. One in about five items I've sold recently seems to have a non-payer.

I normally send an invoice the next day then re-send a few days later. I raise a case a few days after that. I raised on yesterday for an item I sold on 3 October.

Open the item and there is a 'report problem' button. You will need to open a case for non-payment. Ebay will then contact your buyer. There is a window for them to reply (of a few days) and if you hear nothing you can close the case and Ebay will refund your fees. You can then either make a second offer or relist the item.

It is a pain but that's the way it is I'm afraid. I think if someone hasn't paid you in four days they're not going to pay you at all!

Wait 4 days - if no payment you close the case and get fvf refunded. Only then you can relist or do a second chance offer. You have to wait 4 days until you do this or you risk 2 buyers and only 1 item.

Do you all have settings to block buyers with unpaid item strikes? It's not hard to set and worth it if NPBs upset you (NPBs don't upset me, but I barely get any because I don't let most bid).

I tend to wait 1 day, send an invoice, wait another 2 days, send another invoice, and then file UID after 4-5 days. Remember they can still leave FB at any time as long as they pay up before UID times out, so always be courteous & helpful.

@Tethersend
Go here to filter out most Non-paying buyers. You're looking to block people with 2+ NPBs in last yr. People only get on this list because sellers followed correct procedure to complain about them.

Go here to file an unpaid item dispute. Make sure you have invoiced them at least once before filing UID (many buyers won't pay until invoiced).

DO NOT RELIST OR OFFER 2ND CHANCE until the UID has timed out & you received refund of final sale fees (FVF); you will be emailed to confirm that. No end of trouble if you don't follow this procedure.

Thank you all. And thanks for links, lljkk. Have blocked buyers with 2 unpaid item strikes in the last 12 months.

Since I've already (politely) emailed the buyers and sent invoices, I have opened two UIDs. Do I have to close them manually after four days? Will it prompt me to do so?

Lljkk- when you say do not relist until UIDS has timed out, do you mean after four days of opening it?

I am 99% sure they close manually in 4 days if no payment via Paypal.

Do not relist or reoffer until you get the email from Ebay to say that cases have closed in your favour.

What if original buyer pays at last minute but you have already agreed to sell or indeed have already sent it off to another buyer; the first buyer will be in a position to leave you horrendous feedback. Don't risk it.

lljkk · 08/10/2013 13:25

Sorry, I meant they close AUTOMATICALLY, no need for you to do anything more.

tethersend · 08/10/2013 13:27

Ok, great. Thanks again Smile

I had one that waited to pay until the very last moment before case was about to close - 9 days after winning bid so I agree with lljkk, wait before re listing.
