Have won an item, paid for it and now the seller has gone quiet

I'm a fairly inexperienced Ebayer, but all the transactions I've been involved with have been glitch free so far.

So, on Sunday evening I won the bidding for a large piece of furniture. The seller has over 1,000 transactions under his belt and 100% feedback.

The terms were pay by Paypal and arrange a courier. On Monday morning I contacted him to say I have a van and would prefer to pick the item up. Monday evening he replies. No problem he says, just let me know when.

I proceed to pay via paypal and then contacted him offering a variety of pick up times and waited.

I've now sent a message each day this week but received on reply. There are no contact details on ebay other than an address. I've sent him a variety of ways to contact me.

I contacted him through the ebay "contact the seller" tab. I hope this is right? Am I doing something wrong here?

no you are not doing anything wrong - but they are very silly accepting paypal and asking you to arrange the courier

If I were you I would file not received and get your money back and shop elsewhere. A seller should always arrange the courier themselves, never the buyer.

You should be able to get their address & phone number from Ebay, OP. I would try phoning them first before giving up.

I sell furniture and do not arrange couriers but happy to assist if the buyer wants to arrange one themselves

LilyBossom · 03/10/2013 20:12

but if the buyer arranges their own courier if the item gets damaged the seller cannot claim for that but will have to refund so would be out of pocket, plus the seller has no proof of delivery so buyer could claim not received. Plus they prob will still have to pack the item and wait in for them to turn up.

It is never, ever recommended to let a buyer organise courier, unless of course they pay cash. And a seller should never take paypal for a collected item, which is what happens if buyer arranges courier too.

Thanks for all the advice.

I'm just surprised he hasn't got back in touch. I've checked through my messages. I had a copy of all the messages I sent to him sent to my mail account too, but when I go onto myEbay and check the messages in my Sent folder it only shows the first message I sent and the one this morning.

Also, there is no message from him in myEbay inbox, although I have one in my iCloud email, if that makes sense?

I am confused. He is local and seems to run a well organised business and his approach was open and relaxed when I apologised for not reading the bit about needing to organise a courier and wanting to use my own transport.

Hmmmmmm. We're pretty rural here and sparsely populated and people rely on reputations and goodwill. This is odd.

I have his address now, but no phone number.

I'm going to message him through Ebay again this evening and then check it arrives in my Sent folder

Success! I've had a reply from the seller this morning. Am going to arrange collection shortly. Its all fine. Theres been a slight misunderstanding.

Lily you've made some good points. Looking back all the transactions I've been involved with for large objects have always been cash on collection. I thought it was just for ease, but I can see how the seller could be leaving themselves open to all sorts of problems
