EBay novice here. I sold my ds2 suit the other week, buyer has contacted to say the waistcoat and trousers don't match. As bad as this sounds, I didn't notice, dh bought it for him and he only wore it for a few hours then after washing I took photos and put it on eBay not stating that they don't match because I didn't notice. I had put a no returns on the suit. I contacted the buyer to apologise and ask her what would she like me to do to rectify the mistake and she wants me to refund the amount it would cost to buy new trousers to match the suit. I sold the suit for £20 and she's asking for £13. Is this too much? Is she being unreasonable or should I honour this amount?

TIA

No. You ask her to return it and you refund. Why should she get two pairs of trousers? Or ask her to return the trousers. Any new pair she buys won't match either. It is impossible to match up a new pair of trousers w/ a different jacket. She's trying it on.

Get a return, re advertise the suit and refund her.

SavoyCabbage · 27/08/2013 08:26

I would get her to return it too.

lljkk · 27/08/2013 08:30

U, morally: did you advertise them as matching? Do they match when you look at them?

U doesn't matter in terms of Ebay selling: if you didn't describe them as a well-matched set you might be in rights to ask for a return and then refund & cancel.

Hassle & protecting your account: I would probably counter-offer something like £10 if they weren't advertised as a matching set. She may trash your DSRs & FB, though, if she doesn't get exactly what she wants.

Selling clothes on Ebay fraught with problems.

That is why it is best to tell her to return them and refund her plus registered postage. Ask her to get proof of postage too.

Keep it simple. Don't get into protracted deliberation over 'compensation' or money for new trousers.

Because you advertised them incorrectly say that you will override your no returns which was originally in place to protect you against 'change-of-minders.

mignonette · 27/08/2013 08:36

And if she trashes your account, then as a newbie set up another.

PattieOfurniture · 27/08/2013 08:46

Thanks all, I'm going to ask her to return.
I've got 50 something stars but it's took me years to get them, mostly through buying, not sold much.

Stars and feedback are not real things like money.

LilyBossom · 27/08/2013 09:12

I agree return and refund

You don't get stars from buying, only feedback, and with only 50 it is easy to set up a new account and start again.

I'm going to message her now. Another quick question before I do. Do I refund then she sends, or do I wait for it to arrive then refund?

OP posts:
MoaningMingeWhingesAgain · 27/08/2013 11:06

wait until it arrives before refunding.

Rooners · 27/08/2013 11:11

wait for it to arrive.

I would offer a partial refund before, so she can weigh up her options. I'd also be asking for photographic proof for my records. (in a nice way)

Be very apologetic. Be reasonable.

Offer her up to a tenner, not a penny more, or, a full refund if she pays return postage.

Refund only on receipt of the garment - make sure it's the one you sent!

nickstmoritz · 27/08/2013 11:47

I think the seller refunds return postage if returns are for item not as described.

If you think you might not get £20 again due to the mismatch then I would be tempted to refund some but £13 seems a bit steep. Return postage will cost you £5 ish probably so maybe up to £10. The buyer would then have the suit for £10 which seems fair and you don't have to relist.
However if the buyer seems aggressive or unreasonable I would just go the refund route. Ask her to return (signed for) then refund (with return postage). Be apologetic, refund & she might not leave neg but like others have said you could start again.

I think with ebaying clothes it is best to check & double check them and over rather than under describe including measurements. I have definitely learned that through experience. It is so annoying when you find a small fault just as you are packing..aarggh.

PattieOfurniture · 27/08/2013 12:07

I have partially refunded and she is going to return it.
She seems amicable and not aggressive.
I am genuinely sorry for my mistake and will make sure I don't do it again.
Thank you all for your advice Flowers Cake

I think you should have waited for the return first before refunding - don't be surprised if it never arrives back to you.

PattieOfurniture · 27/08/2013 12:23

I only refunded the postage costs Lily

LilyBossom · 27/08/2013 12:31

you still should have waited until you get it back though.
