I hadn't realised everyone can see how much you are willing to bid!

I've just seen something I really like sitting at a starting price of £40. It's worth a fair bit more than this so I put in a bid at £100 with that being the most maximum I want to pay. Fair enough if someone wants to pay more but I always thought that with eBay you couldn't see how much someone wanted to pay as it encourages dodgy sellers to get their friends bidding. I bid on my iPad where you can't see this, but on the pc it shows in the bidding box that its sitting at £40 but it then says "enter 100 or more"

When did this change, or has it always been like this and I've not noticed?

Only you can see that as its your bid. Others can't.

wallpaperaddict · 15/08/2013 10:42

Is it saying enter £100 or more because you are logged in? As in increase your maximum bid rather than for everyone to see your actual max bid?

TinyTear · 15/08/2013 10:42

It only shows that for you are you are logged in and it knows your bid so if you want to change your bid you can only go higher than your £100

Peachyjustpeachy · 15/08/2013 10:43

Well in that case you should put £5. But willing to pay. £500000000000 then you will definitely get it cos noone will bid that high Grin

MalcolmTuckersMistress · 15/08/2013 10:49

But I'm not logged in on the pc! How odd. Confused

It's definitely telling me (and i assume the rest of the world!) logged out to enter £101.78 or more (my exact last bid) and it still showing me as the highest bidder winning the auction currently at £40 (a few days to go so i do expect it to increase) for the item as it is now.

I hope this makes sense!

No, looking around I can definitely see other people's highest bids of what they are willing to pay! Next to the box where you enter your price.

OP posts:
MalcolmTuckersMistress · 15/08/2013 10:55

Look here's a random example...

The current price sits at £8, but the box says enter 8.50 or more. Obviously that 8.50 is the maximum that bidder is willing to pay

And another.

Clearly the highest bidder is willing to pay 3.39 for this dress when the winning bid currently sits at 3.19

When I look at the box next to something it seems that it's just saying what the next possible bid will be, eg something at £1, it says enter £1.20 or more, or something a £150, enter £155 or more. Odd!

wallpaperaddict · 15/08/2013 11:00

Those are showing what the next possible bid is, not the maximum they are willing to pay. The person currently winning at 3.19 may have put £5.00 in. But to enter bidding you need to put 3.39 in.

MrsBungle · 15/08/2013 11:00

I don;t think the enter £3.39 or more is the other bidders highest bid -it's just the next bid needed to raise the price. Someone could have put in £5 as their highest bid for that item but the price goes up in stages.

MrsBungle · 15/08/2013 11:01

Lol, x post with wallpaper!

LynetteScavo · 15/08/2013 11:02

It's because someone else has bid a very close amount to you already.

It's hard to explain right now because Dc are being very loud.

MalcolmTuckersMistress · 15/08/2013 11:03

But the one I'm bidding on, I put in £101.87 that's my maximum bid and it is showing up in that little box. Now everyone can see that's my bid but its sitting at £40! I could get out bid by 1p at the last second! That would be annoying.

But I'm so confused! Can you tell I'm not a regular ebayer?

OnTheNingNangNong · 15/08/2013 11:04

It's the minimum amount you need to enter to bid, not the current bidders maximum bid. iIRC its always been that way

eurochick · 15/08/2013 11:05

You are not seeing everyone's highest bid, just the next bidding increment, as others have said.

MrsHoarder · 15/08/2013 11:07

Are you definitely fully logged out? Your name isn't at the top of the screen at all? I've never seen a "You need to bid" above the standard minimum increment (for that price band).

SPBisResisting · 15/08/2013 11:08

Op it is confusing and I dont fully understand. But I know in tbe past when ive put in the amount they suggest ive been told ive been outbid on the next scree . So it does just sem to be the suggested next increment - 20p higher or whatever

wallpaperaddict · 15/08/2013 11:16

OP if you tell me what you are bidding on, I will look from my end and see what it's saying I need to bid. PM if you prefer!

MalcolmTuckersMistress · 15/08/2013 11:19

Perhaps it's because I've entered a much higher amount than the initial starting price because I really want it? This is coming p as the next high bid to put in.

Perhaps because you can't see it on the iPad, if someone comes along and bids on their iPad £45 without seeinf the £101 then the £101 will then decrease to £46 and it'll carry on as normal.

I think I'm too stupid to use the Internet. I think I'm going to try and go back to 1988 and go to more jumble sales instead.

You probably need to clear the cache in your browser. Or log out and log in as somebody else.

If you want to PM me the link to the item I can check for you? I don't have a spare £40 let alone £100 so I promise not to outbid you Grin
