At what price do you use recorded delivery?

I only usually sell collection only bulky items or more expensive items requiring courier or Royal Mail special delivery.

Having a clear out I've listed lots of women's and baby clothes all listed with second class standard posting, most are going for under £5 but some up to £15ish.

I was wondering at what price other MNetters use recorded, £10? £20?
Just looking to see where others set their limits

I think it depends on their feedback and stars, and also if they paid quickly. But I normally set around £10.00;

standard royal mail with proof of posting is covered against loss upto £20 so that is roughly were I set limit if an auction I assume price may go up so signed for on things starting at around £14-15

second class signed is 3.70 for small parcel and myhermes is 4.20 tracked but not necessarily signed for but tracked is good enough for ebay and paypal as proof of delivery

obviously you can't change it after sale if it sells for much more but then if it sells for £20 more than you thought you will still have plenty extra money even allowing for paying the £1.10 extra for signed for out of your own pocket

To be honest I send everything 2nd class recorded. I've had my fingers burnt a couple of times so its recorded or nothing.

But I'm interested to see what others do as I may be missing out in something here. I've never really read all the Royal Mail t&cs re insurance etc.

I've posted all the things that have sold for under £5 as second class standard but there were a couple who I was a bit suspicious of the buyers so sent those and paid the extra myself for recorded

£20 would be the rational choice, I think around £10 for my piece of mind. nearly £4 is a lot for an item you might only sell for 99p.

royal mail will compensate for loss of any item that did not arrive the earliest you can submit claim is 15 working days ( real time 3 weeks) you must have certificate of posting, you need to submit proof of value if no receipt ebay page is OK with item number. if it is a brand new item they expect original receipt

they only compensate for damage if outer packaging visibly damaged ) ie box squashed soaked in water plastic mailing bag ripped etc
if broken inside but box fine they assume inadequately packed so you will fail in a claim the same goes for every single courier too

no courier or royal mail will pay for broken items if they were ceramic glass pictures or antiques,

royal mail will insure breakables but only with special delivery not signed for and you would have to prove adequately packed

only specialist antique couriers cover breakables they cost 30-50 pounds and they come and pack the item at your house and unpack it at recipients house so no possibility of claiming it arrived broke

in reality breakable items are not covered against damage by anyone cheaply, if you are covering yourself against claim of it going missing the myhermescollectplus (upto£50 compensation included ) for anything bigger than small parcel and logically only Royal mail signed for if worth more than £20 and less than £50

in reality only 0.5 parcels go missing so signed for with items selling for minor money ie less than £10 anyway is going to put off even genuine buyers i do not want to pay 1.10 extra for a t shirt to give the seller peace of mind when there is no benefit to me, I am happy to pay for signed for on expensive items
