Why are some sellers rude to potential buyers!? (just a little rant really!)

Before bidding on a dining table and chairs I asked the seller for a bit more info - only 1 very bad picture, very brief description and it had a cheap starting price - I asked if there was any damage/ general condition etc.
The seller replied in a really abrupt manner and said that there was cosmetic damage and that she had seen ones that were £500 and perhaps that would be better for me!

Why, if you want to sell something, would you be rude to the person who may potentially buy it from you!?

I contacted an ebayer seller asking if a hat she was selling was pale cream/white or dark cream/beige.

Her reply? 'can I suggest you don't bid on it' Hmm

InLoveWithDavidTennant · 27/06/2013 16:58

its never happened to me but if it ever did then they wouldnt get my custom... just a reply with something like "no need to be so rude"

maybe remind them that theres an "ask seller a question" option and politeness if free Wink

Quite often they begin with the rudeness already in the listing: "No these, these or these kinds of buyers! I'll not be held responsible or liable for ANYTHING. etc. Do not bother bidding if you are not 100% sure you're happy with the item" Kind of makes you feel negative already. Also, implies that customers often have problems with this seller, hence the need for massive disclaimer.

I understand that the sellers might want to say these kinds of things, but they could be more discrete and not print it all with massive letters and lots of exclamation marks..

Toys I know ! way to get a sale by putting all potential buyers off straight away.

Lots of times I've looked at stuff and not liked the tone of the listing, I've seen one recently that no description of the actual item just a big rant, in capital letters, about how they're not responsible if the parcel goes missing etc.

fergoose · 28/06/2013 10:23

and they are responsible if it goes missing - their rant is not only meaningless, they are wrong.

carolthesecretary · 28/06/2013 10:28

Seems to be the way of the world at the moment.

I'm looking for a job and having the same problem with recruiters. Some are unbelievably rude and abrupt. I just put them on a black list and don't deal with them.

InLoveWithDavidTennant · 28/06/2013 12:34

oh yes... the ones that say they are not responsible are very common. i dont touch them at all. unfortunately many people believe it.

i think ebay should make it clear that it IS the seller thats responsible if a parcel goes missing.

i might message the next one i come accross Wink

Ooof, I had one who went silent for a fortnight after I paid. Her listing said "items sent day after payment, or same day if payment made before 10am".

I sent a message saying "hi, has this been sent yet?" a week after I paid. No response after a week so I sent another one saying "please let me know if you have dispatched this item?" I was worried it had got lost in the post you see.

An hour later I got a rant back about how her child was poorly and she was sorry she had let real life get in the way of eBay, she didn't understand why I was so aggressive, etc, etc.

Not my problem I'm afraid. Would have taken her 2 minutes to send a quick message upon receipt of money to explain a possible delay.

Never buying from her again, which is a shame as it was an item I need a fair few of.

Sizzlesthedog · 01/07/2013 17:03

If the seller has a snotty tone to the listing I go to another seller. Have seen some really rude ones

shitface5132 · 15/12/2019 00:11

Because whenever a buyer ask too much questions they're usually a thief.. 99% of the times....

Bouldghirl · 15/12/2019 10:23

@shitface5132 You must have had some pretty bad experiences. Ebay offers the “ask seller a question” option for a reason. In my experience it’s the ones that don’t ask questions you have problems with. Potential buyers that ask specific questions usually before purchasing for a reason. Often it will be something that would be of general interest and you have the option to add the question and answer to the listing for others to see. If you are selling on eBay then by replying to questions quickly and accurately usually leads to a sale. That’s certainly my experience.

Bouldghirl · 15/12/2019 10:26

and of course was it really necessary to dig out a 6 year old thread to rant on?.

DontCallMeShitley · 20/12/2019 08:21

Yep, Zombie thread.

Sadly still happens though.

I wanted to bid on a sofa. You would think someone would have the sense to realise it would need to fit in a room, but no measurements, so I asked. Reply was that they didn't have a tape measure.

Rude and ignorant people all over the place.
