Selling expensive guitar - what's the best option?

DH needs to sell a guitar. It's a good one and will be worth a fair bit to the right person. He's got good photos and a detailed description.

WRT selling options, what is the best way to do it?A reserve? BIN? We want to clear 1,300 after fees etc (it would cost a lot more from a guitar shop).

Have only sold shoes and clothes before so grateful for any advice.

Personally I'd do both - put a BIN for your ideal amount (don't forget to incorporate fees) and put a reserve on for the lowest you would be happy to get.

I would list it this weekend (no listing fees for ordinary auctions!) at the minimum price you want to accept. Probably £1500?, don't forget you'll have high courier costs including insurance, too. Have you got quotes for courier with insurance up to £2k? Try to get the listing to finish next Sunday evening, I suspect, between 8 & 9pm. Wednesday evening listings are good, too.

Be prepared to list it a few times to get the price you want.

Make sure you check into the cost of carriage, if its in a flight case I guess it would weigh a ton

There might be specialist sites for better quality musical instruments or perhaps even a specialist auction. ?

I would use a specialist courier if £2000 the sort that move antiques, trackable all the way, often these specialists will come and wrap it and then unwrap in presence of buyer so can;t say damaged on arrival

obviously it needs more than cloth case needs at least 10cm of padding all round not just bubble wrap etc and a big very sturdy box

listing fees are never more a few pounds so neglible in thids case and final fees are 10% upto max of £70 ( sale price 700) so you know final fee will not e more than 70 paypal is 3.4% but you could ask for bank transfer to avoid that

We have bought a couple of fairly expensive guitars on eBay.

My advice would be to list the guitars as collection only and cash on collection. Yes it limits your market a little but who would buy something like this without seeing first anyway? I think this is the sort of item people will travel quite a long way to collect - at least my DH would.

By asking for cash on collection you rule out the possibility of an issue with a dispute.
