Buyer wants money back

Sold a pushchair few days ago - cash on collection

The buyer messaged me today asking for a refund but to keep item as the pushchair isnt what they wanted. They are claiming a broken wheel and dents in handle. Neither were like that when I sold.

What should I do?

I'd say they can of course have a full refund as soon as they bring back the pushchair.

They're trying it on.

cash on collection surely means they should have inspected it before handing over the money?

It was collection so they had a chance to inspect. By law you don't have to do anything. If it was posted then they would have to return at their own expense and you would have to refund.

They had a chance to inspect it, surely they would have noticed those things when they collected it. I wouldn't give them a refund, esp if they have broken it.

I've refused refund, they replied with threatening messages.

stop replying to them - if messages are via ebay report them, use the report a buyer function in the resolution centre and contact police on 101 to report the threats

what are they saying?

I've blocked the buyer.
Theyve been saying we will come break into your house and take what we are owed etc

Yes call police if they are threatening you. Do you have pictures showing no damage?

I've rang 101 was informed to keep all messages etc etc and ring if escalates any more.

They told me they are going to police as I sold a broken item

They are trying it on. Report, tell them who you have reported it too and ignore any further contact.

the police will not do anything if the buyer calls them - the buyer is being ridiculous so don't worry there.

Do not respond any further, keep records of all of their contact to you, and report to ebay too.

I can't imagine the police being interested in sale of items tbh. I can't imagine trading standards being interested in a private sale either. The item was sold as seen, surely? I wouldn't engage on any level and keep in contact with the police.

unless they decided to take you to the small claims court for the money there is nothing they can do. ebay cannot force you to refund them.

So they are threatening to break into your house and to take money? Idiots. (I'm sure they're just gobbing off, and wouldn't try to burgle you, but it is their intent to alarm you.)

I hope the Police are taking this seriously. It's harassment.

This is the horrible side of ebay and I hope that ebay help you.

Last year I sold a quinny on eBay to a COC buyer.
Three days later they emailed me to say that their DC didn?t like the pushchair and wouldn?t sit in it so they wanted to return it.
I said I would refund if they wanted to return it. Then they told me that they wanted me to come and collect it, as that was ?only fair since they had to come to my house to get it in the first place?
I said that I couldn?t do that and I would be happy to refund if they wanted to bring it back.

The next day I was shopping and saw them in a shop, with their child in the pushchair
I was surprised but assumed they had convinced their DC to go in the PC.

Then that night I received a reply saying they would be returning the PC the next day I tried to reply telling them not to come, but they didn?t reply.
They turned up at my house with the PC, I told them that I had changed my mind and was not willing to accept a return after seeing them using the PC, they then told me that the PC is unusable as the wheels are wobbly and it is dirty.
I had steam cleaned the entire PC before selling so I knew that it wasn?t dirty, but they unfolded it to show me that the seat and hood were covered in food crumbs and spillage marks.
I had pictures showing the condition of the PC when I sold it so refused to accept dirt that they had clearly caused in less than a week.

In the end I ended up having to close the door on them as they wouldn?t stop trying to arguing with me, they threatened me with all sorts but thankfully the police were very helpful and eBay warned the buyers to leave me alone.

The went on to resell the PC for £40 less than they paid for it and were apparently very rude to the buyer about the low sale price.
