Does PayPal option automatically get added to listings?

DH won a bike auction for DD1 and hit the 'pay now' button, overlooking the fact that the seller had requested cash on collection. Seller is now not best pleased.

DH is an infrequent ebayer so wouldn't have thought to check. Not sure I would have either tbh as am used to sellers preferring PayPal and I try and settle up ASAP. DH is currently trying to work out how to reverse the transaction/whether we can just reimburse the seller for any PayPal commission he has paid. But I was just wondering how much this situation is of the seller's making - could/should he have left the PayPal option off the listing in the first place?

No, it always adds it, which is silly as it's recommended not to accept paypal for collection items - if there's a problem with the transaction, paypal require online proof of delivery which clearly you won't have if it's collected in person.

Also yes the fees come into it for some sellers.

The seller can refund your paypal payment - they shouldn't be annoyed with you, unless it said in the listing 'cash on collection please' etc.

Technically you have to accept paypal for everything but that goes against what paypal/ebay recommend so it's a bit daft.

Anyway - ask the seller to refund your payment, then go and get it and pay cash - should be Ok.

Oh and it isn't your problem to pay them for any fees - they will get these automatically if they refund you.

Let the seller sort it out.

Oh bugger - I think it did request cash on collection and DH just went ahead with the PayPal payment without really thinking. Seller seems to think DH has to initiate the refund though? DH is willing to do the necessary but can't figure out how - but from the sound of your post the seller should be doing it anyway?

Thanks so much for your advice Smile

Don't panic! You've done NOTHING wrong. You're allowed to pay by paypal, even if the seller doesn't want it - but then the seller can refund you and you'd have to start a dispute, bla bla bla - doesn't sound like this will be necessary.

It is the seller's job to refund your payment and it's very easy - tell them to go to their transaction history, and click on the transaction, and there is a 'refund' button next to it. That's all they have to do - then you can arrange to collect and pay for the item in cash.

If seller is being stroppy, you can always back out of it entirely - don't take any abuse. And leave them a negative - which they cannot do to you, so you'll be ok.

Hopefully you can sort it out though.

Just send them a message through ebay explaining that you're new to ebay and haven't done a local sale before.

I think if DH wants to cancel the transaction it needs to be initiated by him but she should be able to refund manually via paypal (not ebay) because you just want to pay in a different way.

SledsImOn · 15/12/2012 09:11

Bertie, the buyer shouldn't have to initiate a cancellation - if they wanted to cancel entirely, the seller would have to agree to it and initiate the process.

But they don't, so the easiest thing is for seller to refund via paypal account, whichI did recently so I know how simple it is.

Thanks so much for the guidance, will get DH to try that with him

Seller can easily refund. Seller loses 20p to Paypal, but that's probably not much compared to total price.

If your DH can't collect so wants to completely cancel, then if I were him I would offer a small payment for the inconvenience caused, say £2 or 1% of purchase price, whichever is greater. Because it's a decent thing to do & I am mostly a seller on Ebay & can see why it's a bloomin' nuisance to seller.

lljkk · 15/12/2012 10:31

ps: tell seller the mechanics are to go to "My Ebay: Selling" ; "Sold" ; "View paypal transaction" ; click "details" and from there can issue a near full refund.

Your DH can still leave Neg F/back even if the transaction is completely cancelled, so in seller's interests to not be too arsey about it all.

Thank you - collection is still fine, it's just the payment method we've cocked up...

you just need to get the seller to refund you and take cash. Have they refunded you yet?

Ktay · 17/12/2012 11:37

Hello - DH picked bike up last night and all was well. He ended up accepting the PayPal payment in the end despite DH having encouraged him to initiate a refund. I guess I'd better nudge DH to give him some nice feedback. Thanks again everyone for benefit of your expertise.

make sure you tell the seller in future never to accept paypal for a collected item. not all buyers are honest and they can lose their item and their money.
