Inadvertently undercharged postage by a lot, wwyd

Went to post some clothes which were considerably heavier than anticipated. I was quoted £5 over what buyer paid so haven't sent item. I have now opened a cancel transaction case with eBay but tbh would prefer to ask buyer to make good loss and still send item.

I know it's my fault but I have lost out on postage before and wondered if I should contact buyer direct or wait to see whether they accept cancellation or not?

send them it was your choice not to weigh first!

Your problem, you should honour the transaction I'm afraid. Be more careful next time.

no you should send them and swallow the expense yourself. Why don't you try for a cheap courier instead?

It's just one of those things when this happens. You still need to send them really rather than ask the buyer to pay for it.

I guess my postage sometimes as I can't be bothered to go to the post office before I list so I do sometimes make a loss.

You should still send them. it is not your buyers fault you did not weigh them before you listed them.

Collect + allow you to send stuff up to 10kg for about £7, if that helps?

I think you're going to have to suck it up. The buyer's going to give you rotten feedback otherwise.

You should send them anyway and pay the cost yourself. I did the same thing once... sold a coat for dh and didn't realise how heavy it was... quoted 3.50 and it cost me 12!!!! I still posted it.

I'm afraid you just have to stick to it and send them, it is not the buyers fault that you made a mistake. Live and learn.

Thanks for the quick replies. I know I have made a mistake and should just put it down to experience. Do I close case with eBay now or wait till buyers notifies then with their decision?

I'd close the case now and send the item asap and explain to the buyer that it's on its way.

Yep I've done that too but always posted the item and took the hit. It was my fault for not checking first.

Use Parcel2Go - get a quote and see how different it is. If you use one of the economy services you may well not lose out.

Thanks for the tips. I will close case and send by collect +. It is cheaper and I still have to make up shortfall but not as much. I already sent a parcel today and overpaid postage to another eBay buyer!

I had this and still sent it by RM as I had said I would in the listing. I don't know where you stand with EBAY if buyers complain that you didn't use the postal service you specified on the description.

THis has happened to me once or twice and I have contacted the buyer, explained the situation and given them the option of paying the extra or recieving a full refund and me relisting the item with correct postage. Buyers have usually opted for the refund.

I would be quite miffed if a seller told me they were not sending me an item because they undercharged on postage.

Just remember to weigh in future then got prices before listing.
