It's only a couple of hundred quid but it's a LOT of money to us. We've been saving for ages for a new kitchen and can't afford to buy actually new and have found a kitchen on ebay. Chap is having it removed in a couple of months and replacing it with a new one. We will collect and he's agreed to let dh help him dismantle it so we're certain on putting it back together again this end.

I asked him about payment given we're not getting it till January and he said would I be happy with half now and half then and then he knows we're serious and we know we're not parting with it all up front. I thought this should be okay as it's through paypal and buyer protection is good. So I did buy it now and requested a new total. He says he can't work out how to send a new invoice so suggested a cheque. I said no and could he try again. He still can't work it out so said he could send his bank details and I could transfer the money that way.

I'm a bit wobbly. Am I right in thinking it's best to insist we do it through paypal?

Am I worrying unnecessarily. The guy's given me his address and mobile number. Surely he wouldn't be pulling a fast one? And offering his bank details suggests he's fairly trusting? Oh I don't know.

I went ahead because he had 100% feedback and a history as a buyer and seller but having scrolled through, he has some negative feedback from years ago. As a seller. But why does it say 100%.

Oh I'm sorry to be anxious about it all but it's a lot of money and I don't want to make a mistake.

You are not thick for thinking he's not going to rip you off, but you will be worried I think if you give him the money so far in advance. Most people on eBay are honest. When it works it is brilliant.

EdMcDunnough · 25/09/2012 13:32

You're not thick. It just makes sense to protect yourself with this sort of purchase. Obviously having the money in advance will work for him. But if you've got to trust him then he should trust you too.

Wedding cakes are different, normally a company or a proper business - this is just a person you've never met and cannot have any comeback against if the kitchen gets broken etc.

If necessary, blame it on your DH or someone else, say they are not happy about it, whatever it takes - I know you will be nice and hopefully the seller will understand.

What if it falls to pieces when he takes it out?

Our builders were all for selling our old kitchen, went on and on about how wasteful it was just throwing it in the skip. I knew that anything put in any cupboard on one wall would be covered in mould in a week and therefore it was reasonable to assume the cupboards on that wall would be mouldy themselves - once the builder had taken them off the wall, he agreed with me. Big, hairy mould and huge mushrooms aplenty.

It's a nice kitchen. It has blue bits.

Grin at blue bits

My parents bought a second hand kitchen which came out of a very fancy house, the kitchen went in beautifully and stayed for 10 years, so it can work.

I don't trust someone selling their kitchen 3 months early in anticipation of putting in a new one. I put a new kitchen in in my house, it was all done at the same time, the flooring, tiles everything. He seems to be saying he's going to have all his kitchen stripped and contents boxed up a few months before actual kitchen Hmm

If it gets damaged when removing (which happens easily) you've lost half your money.

Stick with cash on collection, he knows now he will sell it easily dismantled so it's no problem.

fergoose · 25/09/2012 13:51

well maybe you can still have your nice kitchen with blue bits, when you get it in Jan and pay the seller cash for it.

ShowOfHands · 25/09/2012 18:10

He's completely happy with cash on collection. Said his only concern throughout is that he knows somebody is going to take it away as he has nowhere to store it and no use for an extra kitchen.

He's going to let me know when it's ready to be dismantled and we can go, see it, help dismantle and pay when we're satisfied.

That's perfect. Glad he's a good seller.

ShowOfHands · 25/09/2012 18:26

That's okay isn't it? We're going to get a kitchen for our money?
