How about this little puzzle then fellow ebayers?

I've just checked my listings and can't quite understand bidder's actions.

I have an item listed with a start price of £10. It received a bid today from an ebayer with 1000+ fb.

Within a couple of hours it received a bid from another bidder with less than 50 fb and took the price up to £34.98 with bidder no1 still in the lead. At this point it was showing as 2 bidders, 3 bids (I'm on the app so don't know who has made multiple bids).

I've just checked it now and the price has gone back down to £22.?? with bidder no2 winning.

It looks like bidder no1 has reduced their highest bid to put no2 in the lead...ie like I've rigged it to push the price up.

Why would someone do that?! Confused

Btw, it still has 3 days left with plenty of watchers so I'm hoping for a few other bids yet but I'm just a bit unsure what's happened and why.

Bidder number 1 changed their mind I guess?

HiccupHaddockHorrendous · 09/09/2012 11:45

But bidder number 1 still has a bid placed. If they changed their mind and didn't want it anymore, wouldn't they just remove their bid?

you would have thought so. why don't you email them and ask?

HiccupHaddockHorrendous · 09/09/2012 12:36

I suppose I'm not bothered enough to email, just trying to work out if it's something obvious that I hadn't come across before.

You can reduce your highest bid. Maybe they saw other ones at a cheaper price? Or they regretted bidding so much after a while.

Its rubbish because if bidder 2 sees they might think its Shill bidding and remove their bid altogether.

HiccupHaddockHorrendous · 09/09/2012 12:44

I didn't realise you reduce your highest bid...is it a similar process as retracting your bid?

I know, I'm worried about it looking like shill bidding too.

Anyway, it's gaining watchers all the time so hopefully not all 47 of them are just watching because they're selling the same thing Grin.

Hmmm, the plot thickens!

High FB bidder has now bid again and is currently the highest bidder. I guess they might be bidding on a few.

My watchers are up to 55 now so fingers crossed it gets a bit higher!

If you are not happy you can always block that bidder - seems they are a bit up and down. Best to get rid before they win the auction rather than have them win and cause other problems.

HiccupHaddockHorrendous · 10/09/2012 12:34

I'm not unhappy, just bemused by the whole thing Smile.

I would assume a bidder with more than 1000 FB isn't going to be too problematic...hope I don't have to eat my words Grin

Any update?

HiccupHaddockHorrendous · 17/09/2012 16:13

It sold to a completely different bidder Grin.

Hopefully, it arrived today...might just go and check!
