Buyer wants to return an item - what do I do?

I've just had an email from Ebay saying someone wants to return an item - as it wasn't what he expected. It's a new item and I'm a business seller.

It's only £4 but it costs £2.20 in postage (it'll cost him 95p on top of this for recorded)

What do I do? Do I have to refund all his original payment i.e. item cost and postage? (in which case I'm down £2.20) What about his postage costs?

Thanks

Yes you refund everything he paid you, and if not as described you should really refund his return postage costs too to be honest.

It is exactly as described, he just didn't read the description, so effectively, he has changed his mind.

It seems unfair that I have to swallow the postage costs, even though I'll be able to sell it again (assuming it hasn't been opened etc) the extra postage will have more than wiped out any profit on it.

oh well - as a business seller you do need to refund all of their original payment even if they pay to return the item.

I thought that you just refund the cost of the item- not your fault that he changed his mind!

Could you email ebay for advice?

Just read all the Ebay stuff (links helpfully appeared after I completed the form), I do have to refund the original postage but as my terms say that I won't pay return postage unless it's damaged, then I don't need to refund the return postage.

Would you be surprised to know that he's a newbie?

Just read that back and have decided I shouldn't be allowed to MN this late at night.

Thanks for your help Fergoose and your sympathy Sunflower
