Question for sellers about retracted bids

HairyToedHobbit · 22/08/2012 20:07

When a bidder wants to withdraw a bid, do they have to ask the seller's permission?

I bid on an item and was outbid. The other bidder then withdrew theirs due to "wrong amount entered" and then bid again only one pound less than my bid. Their two bids and withdrawal took place over approximately three minutes Hmm

Blatent shill bidding Im afraid. Report report report to ebay, thieving fuckers.

HairyToedHobbit · 22/08/2012 20:36

Thank you. What I thought was going on then Angry. I was tempted to go ahead with the purchase as it's something I really need for DD and I wouldn't have bid what I did unless I was happy to pay that. However, I don't like anyone getting one over on me so will report.

And cancel your bid too so you don't win the auction.

HairyToedHobbit · 23/08/2012 00:50

Thanks fergoose, unfortunately I only realised what had happened after the auction finished. Wish I'd asked on here earlier now.

The seller emailed me immediately after the auction ended to ask when I would be collecting. I asked for the address as I had to phone someone to collect it for me. I haven't heard back yet. I have reported them though but not sure if it's too late after auction finishes Confused

What annoys me the most is that surely you shouldn't be able to withdraw a winning bid and then replace it with a losing one. The system shouldn't let you Angry

No that is true - have you spoken to eBay live help, may get it dealt with quicker that way.

HairyToedHobbit · 23/08/2012 13:01

Have heard back from ebay now. Their suggestion is that I pull the seller's details to ask them to cancel the transaction. I don't understand why I need to get their details and more to the point - why should I share mine with someone who has attempted to scam me? We have already been in contact via ebay and the seller still hasn't got back to me with a collection address anyway. It's not like I can get their details and just turn up.

How do I use live help? I have over 500 feedback mainly as a buyer and have been on ebay for years and this is the first time I've knowingly been ripped off. I'm guessing it's happened before but not so blatantly. Have had to claim through paypal a couple of times for items not sent lost in the post but this is complicated by being cash on collection.

so what did they say about the shill bidding? Why should you agree to cancel the transaction, they get their fees back and don't get a strike and can still continue shilling then - not very good.

When you go through the contact us on eBay you should get an option there to speak to someone online.

HairyToedHobbit · 23/08/2012 14:10

Ebay's response to my reporting of the seller:

"I understand the other buyer retract their bid and you want to retract your bid also. ... With regards to the bid retraction of the other buyer, I can confirm that we have taken the appropriate action.

A cancel transaction request cannot be opened by you the buyer or eBay, only the seller has the option to do this."

They then suggest getting seller's details.

I have replied in a way that even those who are sadly hard of thinking should be able to understand. I am half expecting a reply asking "what is shill bidding?" though Sad

so they have totally ignored the shill bidding - have you reported the auction itself for shill bidding from the auction page?

sarahtigh · 23/08/2012 21:45

with shill bidding you have to prove their is a connection between seller and the bidder who retracted, obviously if someone has two accounts with same ISP it is easy but if bidder who retracted lives 200 miles away and as never bid on this sellers stuff before it would be impossible to prove

HairyToedHobbit · 24/08/2012 00:47

Thank you for all the advice. I have now reported the auction for shill bidding. Haven't heard back from the seller or ebay yet. DH thinks that I will get a message saying the item has been stolen overnight from the garden and so sadly is no longer available whereas I will be waiting for it to be re-listed Wink

sarahtigh Do you mean that ebay has to prove it? Going by the timings I would expect both seller and the other bidder to be sat next to each other or even using different browsers on the same laptop Hmm. It could well be a one off as the seller hasn't sold much for ages going by their feedback.

while I think it was shill bidding it may not have been but if ebay investigate and find addresses a long way apart and not using same ISP they could not really provide evidence that shill bidding happenned no-one giulty unitl proved so etc

if you retract a bid late i think it just retracts your last bid and not all your bids so if you had been bidding uo in £5 then retracted at say £85 it would leave your last bifd at £75

it has happenned to me selling fairly valuablee antique they normally sell at 70-100 I had 3 similar ones 2 sold at 68 and 77 respectively and one at 445 or something, then 3 days later he says oh I can't pay just wanted to see what other bidder was going up till so he doesn't pay eventuially after i close case I offer to 2nd bidder who of course having now released his bid was increased by guy A does not want either. I block first bidder and when I finally relisted I noticed that he had tried to bid again silly silly man then it eventually 3 weeks down the line sells for close to the price of others, a whole heap of hassle because someone plays silly games!!!!!
