Is this dodgy? Or am I too suspicious?

Sold some items on eBay over the weekend, buyer paid immediately by PayPal - 100% feedback, rating 500+, member for 5+ years.

He has asked if I have another, related item to sell, which I do (it's furniture BTW, nothing dodgy) and has suggested he pay by PayPal and collects in person. He would have to drive 200+ miles each direction to get some 2nd hand (not antique or collectable) furniture which I would sell for about £20-30.

This just feels odd and I can't put my finger on what the scam could be. I wouldn't take PayPal payment for collection so that would be OK, would take cash. Just don't get why he would drive that distance for something old and not v desirable - I was about to take them to the tip.

Am I missing something obvious?

it is dodgy in that you should only accept cash for collection items - refund their paypal payment in full and ask them to bring cash when they collect it. Apart from that I can't see a scam.

He hasn't paid yet as we haven't agreed price etc - PayPal payment was for the related item which I posted this morning as agreed.

I can't see any scam either, just really can't understand why he would drive all this way for something that isn't much cop!

Have you spoken to the guy, and are sure he's driving that far? Perhaps is moving to the area or has family nearby and offered to buy it for them? It doesn't souns too suspicious to me, I'd just make sure someone is around when they collect just in case x

Is it possible he has friends/family near you that he might be visiting (or that might do the picking up). I sometimes look for things near PILs or my mum if we're going to see them soon.

I would feel the same as you OP - something not quite right ! - would definitely make sure you are not alone when he picks the stuff up and just collect cash, don't go through pay pal, I also can't see why anyone would drive so far for something of such little value.

I didn't want to ask outright about why on earth he would do this so said something like 'are you sure you don't want me to get a cheap courier quote as it's surely going to cost more than that in fuel'.

If it was me that would be my cue to say no, I'm there anyway for work or my friend will get it etc. Something just feels odd about it. If I do go through with it will prob get my husband to meet him at a nearby petrol station instead of giving home address, but I'm thinking for the sake of £20 I might not go for it.

I've told him no go for PayPal so will see what he says and have a think from there.

Thanks all for replies.
