Buyer won't pay PayPal - saying they'll come with the cash

Do I have to accept this? The listing said Paypal. She's won the item and emailed me saying "I'm going to pay cash when I collect it, ok?". I replied saying I'd prefer PayPal. She has just emailed me saying she doesn't understand why I'm insisting on PP so she's going to bring cash because she's done it before and it was fine.

I'm fuming at her tone. Do I have to allow cash? It just means I have to go into the bloody bank and pay it over the counter when with PP I could transfer it. I don't drive and live rurally. I dont want the bloody cash!

It's up to you if you have a preferred method, as long as you stated on the listing. But if it's collection you are better with cash. If they pay with PayPal, they could say something went wrong after and make a claim for a refund.

TerminalAtrocity · 03/08/2012 12:53

Can't they do that even if they pay cash? Via eBay?

Cash is better as You dont get paypal fees. But if You want paypal then just cancel the transaction station the buyer disagrees over the terms of sale.

AngelWreakinHavoc · 03/08/2012 12:55

*stating not station Hmm

OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 03/08/2012 12:56

No TA. They can't force you to give cash back. But they can do a PayPal refund.

savoycabbage · 03/08/2012 12:58

Most people prefer/insist on cash on collection so she probably thinks you are a bit odd.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 03/08/2012 13:01

Cash is definitely better for collections. You don't really have a right to be 'fuming' about it - it'll save you money in paypal fees! Besides, what the hell is wrong with cash? Confused

TerminalAtrocity · 03/08/2012 13:02

She does think I'm odd Grin

She said "I don't understand why you want PP so I'm paying you cash anyway". You don't understand because you didn't bother to ask!

That makes me want to cancel the bloody thing just to spite myself.

I can take the cash but it does mean I'll have to take it to the bank and that's not until next week, with two kids on a bus. If I wanted cash on collection I'd have said it.

I prefer cash for collection items. No fees and they can't make a claim 2 weeks later saying there was something wrong with it and get their money refunded.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 03/08/2012 13:05

But you are odd! Grin

Why do you have to pay the cash into the bank, why can't you just use it for shopping instead

savoycabbage · 03/08/2012 13:05

I would just tell her that then.

Cash is better though

Musomathsci · 03/08/2012 13:07

Do you actually want to sell the item,or not? She's being a bit irritating, sure, but is it actually that big a deal?

OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 03/08/2012 13:07

Is it a substantial amount? Is that why you don't want cash?

TerminalAtrocity · 03/08/2012 13:16

Because I'm on mat leave, not getting paid and I've ebayed these things to put money in the bank for bills. I'll take the cash of course but it tends to get frittered away.

Thanks for all your advice.

you must never ever take paypal for a collection only item - you must only take cash. Otherwise they can do a chargeback and you lose your item and money. Plus no fees either.

TerminalAtrocity · 03/08/2012 16:17

I've never heard of this before. Does the same not apply to a posted item?

OP posts:
MirandaWest · 03/08/2012 16:20

I think it's because there's no way to prove with a collected item that the buyer actually got the item whereas with posting it as long as you send it by a trackable method it can't be disputed.

fergoose · 03/08/2012 17:29

the only way you can be safe is to post everything with a signature - that is part of the paypal agreement. Without proof of delivery a buyer will always get a refund if they claim not to receive an item, whether it was posted or collected.

thisisyesterday · 03/08/2012 17:32

she is being very rude and that would put my back up tbh!

but you are better off taking cash because otherwise she can claim she hasn't received the item and get a refund.
plus, you won't have to pay the fees

PigletJohn · 03/08/2012 17:46

and if you were dishonest, if she tried to return it, you could deny it was paid for and collected.

sarahtigh · 04/08/2012 00:00

NEVER EVER take paypal for collection items, they pay by paypal collect item raise dispute with ebay saying no item you have no proof of delivery they get money back you minus item and money,

She is doing you a big favour by telling you to take cash, proves she is probably honest really and not taking advantage of you, just pay by cash for next lot of fuel, next time in supermarket etc instread of debit/credit card if can not be bothered going to bank

at least if posted item and they claimed it was not delivered you could claim from Royal mail, with collection no-one to claim from

MildredIsMyAlterEgo · 04/08/2012 00:05

Agree, Paypal for collected items is a total no no.

Listen to ^^ and take heed.

lagoonhaze · 04/08/2012 11:53

Cash on collection only! Too many scammers around!

TerminalAtrocity · 04/08/2012 21:06

Wow, I have never heard of this. Thanks for the warning. All sorted now and I'll make sure I say cash only for collection only listings.

We had a chat, she seemed quite nice in the end. I'm over it Smile
