Are people mad?

I'm selling DS's MaxinCosi group 0+ seat with the ISOFIX base collection only.

4 separate people have contacted me this afternoon asking if they could arrange their own courier to pick this up. I've told all these people that the reason I'm doing collection only is that I don't have any suitable protective packaging and that is why I can't offer postage. All of them have responded "that's OK, just chuck it in a bin bag, I don't care about the packaging". It's a safety item FFS. Why would anyone take the risk of couriers chucking it about unprotected?

After using eBay for about ten years, I can safely say, yes people are mad.

BonkeyMollocks · 15/07/2012 18:50

Yup, Ebay is a nuthouse!

EmilieFloge · 15/07/2012 18:51

Yes they are nuts. Stick to your guns. You alone have the responsibility of ensuring that any item, collection only or postal delivery, reaches the buyer in perfect condition (or as described).

If they use their own courier you have NO guarantee of this, it is asking you to take an unacceptable risk as they could then claim against you through paypal and get their money back (you have no proof of delivery - paypal need trackable online proof)

Don't even entertain the idea - if you must go with a courier, arrange your own, so you have tracking and also make sure it is packed to the hilt. I would say stick with collection only tbh.

Have you SEEN some of the car seats for sale on ebay? Shock

I'm sure yours is just fine, but I'd never buy one on there as some of the crap people list is ridiculous. Hence people who are likely to buy car seats on ebay are probably not that safety conscious in the first place.

nancerama · 15/07/2012 18:53

I would never dream about putting PFB in a car seat that I hadn't removed the shrink wrap from and installed myself. I have no shame about selling them on though. I am a hypocrite.

People are thick as mince, on the whole.

I have something listed 'blahblah brand new'. I get a message today "Is this brand new?"

Pillock.

EmilieFloge · 15/07/2012 18:59

I have bought our car seats on ebay. One was brand new, display model - it arrived in a bad boxthat had fallen apart on one side, with no additional packaging. That one didn't get any feedback. I asked her to pack it properly. The polystyrene inside was slightly damaged, only on one edge thankfully.

the other one was packed beautifully, almost unused, very nice seller and so I am pleased with it. However I have to say I prefer to buy things from shop sales rather than privately.

Saying that the last car seat I had delivered from a shop, arrived in a pathetic box and probably got quite bashed around on the way.

BertieBotts · 15/07/2012 19:03

There are loads on there which are easily over ten/fifteen years old (you can tell from the fabric styles), I saw one which said "Polystyrene is slightly cracked but still works fine" and one which had the harness threaded so that both shoulder straps came out of the crotch hole and the one crotch strap through one of the shoulder holes Hmm Hmm (It was displayed upside down)

This seems to be happening a lot more these days with good courer deals.

I put clearly on the bottom of my listings that its collection only & payment will be refused if they try it on.

nancerama · 15/07/2012 19:16

It's all coming flooding back why I don't sell very often. I'd forgotten all about the size 8 maternity top which gleaned 6 separate messages asking what size it was, and then a follow up from one loony lady asking if I thought it would fit her. Difficult to tell someone's size if you've never seen them in the flesh or a photo.

I found this listed the other day carseat and my jaw dropped.

I can't believe anyone would think anyone would want to buy a car seat in that state.

nancerama · 18/07/2012 09:03

FFS. Winning bidder lives in Ireland. Doesn't know when they will next be in the UK to pick up. I feel a dispute coming on.

What a pita!

I always put 'pick up within a week of
item ending' that way they can't bitch if you cancle it.

Good luck!! :)

I think people don't realise about the possibility of being scanned and just think collection only = no postage, so a courier collects, no problem.

If someone put money direct into my bank account, I'd let a courier collect - that should be safe, right?

EmilieFloge · 18/07/2012 13:54

They could still open a dispute through ebay, rather than paypal. That's what puts me off as ebay demand the same proofs as paypal.

It's a bugger being a seller these days.

EmilieFloge · 18/07/2012 13:54

Although ebay can't automatically refund the buyer from your bank account, only through paypal - so I think you would be safe financially. Just you might still get a case opened against you etc.

fergoose · 18/07/2012 14:20

if a buyer pays by bank transfer you are safe and eBay cannot refund the buyer the money from you. Also bank transfer is free unlike Paypal.
