Sizing discrepancy

I won a skirt which arrived today. The listing says size 14, and it is labelled a size 14 (from Dorothy P's) but there must've been a mistake somewhere as it's really, really small. I can't even get it up past my knees!! Just to check I hadn't balllooned overnight I measured it against some of my other waistbands and yep - looks tiny in comparison.

Should I say something to the seller or is this just one of those things I need to chalk up to experience? Will ask for measurements next time!

This is the great danger of buying from ebay or indeed online, you can't try on before you buy.

The problem isn't the seller's or ebay in particular. The label says it's a size 14. Seller was accurate in her description. There is a major discrepancy between sizes in stores and even in the same store from far east manufacturers. I always take a tape measure out with me now, can't trust clothing. I think you'll have to chalk this up to experience, ebay said article and see what you can make from it now.

Yes I think you're right. I do love eBay and online shopping in general as I absolutely hate trawling round the shops but this is the downside.

Thanks for the reply.

You need to contact your seller and ask to return the item.
If they agree straight away then open a return case in the resolution centre and send the skirt back asap via recorded delivery.

If they disagree then you need to open an "Item not as described" case again in the resolution centre and when asked what you'd like to happen state "return for a refund".
Again your item should be sent back recorded delivery so it is signed for. Sometimes with these cases Ebay refunds without you needing to return, but not always.

Either way you will receive your refund.
You do not have to make do and keep an item that doesn't fit and that you have no use for. Even if the seller has stated "No returns" you will be able to return it for your money back if you use the Ebay case resolution system.

I wouldn't return it, I would chalk it up as experience because it's not seller's job to see if a 14 label on a High Street make is the same as what you think a 14 means. Buyer is not obliged to refund your return postage & you might be better off flogging it again on Ebay but this time include the waist measurement, and maybe advertise it as a size 10 or 8 if you think that's right.

When I sell stuff I always list measurements for any bit I can easily measure (like waists, inside sleeve, inside leg, rise from crotch to waistband, etc.). For this very reason.

Worth asking in future for those measurements before bidding.

I sold a strapless dress the other day advertised as size 12 per label, & I was really nervous as there was nothing I could easily measure & include in the listing (dress had a uneven bottom hem, too). Buyer is happy, thank goodness!!

Obviously if the Op wants to "chalk it up to experience" and try and sell it on then she is free to do that.
However if she doesn't want the hassle of re-selling an item then she can open a case as I have advised.

Many sellers these days offer returns and refunds and a good seller will pay return post costs too. Until you ask the question you don't know what a seller will be prepared to do for you.

I agree, and I think the seller should have included measurements and stated that even though it was labelled a 14, it actually measured much smaller. I am sure they know it is too small. Have you looked at their feedback both left and received, did they buy it for themselves, found it too small then sold it on to try and recoup without making it clear what size it was?

I bought dress other day, button missing. Asked seller about it, she denied all knowledge and refused to resolve. Then I look at her feedback, she had left a neg couple of weeks earlier when she bought it saying the button was missing, so she was clearly a deceptive seller.

Anyway, I hope your seller is decent :)

Unfortunately I am moving overseas on Monday and don't have time to relist it. So yes, am just going to learn from my mistakes and move on.

I've sold a Size 8 top recently that was bigger than the 14 from the same store!

I also try to include all relevant measurements, but they're buggers to describe and list.

sarahtigh · 13/07/2012 21:27

I think it is unfair to open a not as described case when item is what it said it was size 14 from dorothy perkins, from OP it was not marked torn or anything except it did not fit OP

I do not think seller should have to pay your postage , if a private seller and item is as described , it is not a shop or NEXT directory when you try on annd return if it does not fit. if it is a business its fair enough but to expect a private seller selling something second hand for £2 or something to can a return on something that does not fit right and pay your return postage is a bit mean to say the least.

Everyone knows that size 14 does not mean it will look good on you etc etc so if unsure you need to ask questions

obviously missing button seller is dishonest but most sellers are not
