I spy fee avoidance there

Tryharder · 06/06/2012 09:52

But to be fair, the smallest packet these days costs £2.20. If they sent it recorded which technically speaking they should do in line with eBay/PayPal best practice, that's another £1. But even if they send standard 2nd class, it's not a massive profit on top after they have packed it and the fees have all been paid.

Of course, if they squash it flat enough and have a kindly postmaster, it might go large letter in which case, yes they are slightly taking the piss.

PoohBearsHole · 06/06/2012 11:37

Last time I tried ironing everything down to make it fit into the large letter, managed it but then got charged for the package size anyway so you may think fee avoidance BUT if sending via the post office and recorded delivery anything - e.g 2nd recorded 10g weight will cost the sender £3.15 as a packet but £1.64 as a large letter. If they are for an under 3 then it is slightly taking the piss but they may have been bitten before by this. Sadly now the new prices are in it isn't actually too unreasonable because if you pay by paypal you are charged on the p&p and then you need to pay for packing it up too. Its a flipping mine field out there at the moment!

(I say this as someone who sold something for 99p charged £1.80 for postage and got charged £3.15...........it made my week!)

giggly · 06/06/2012 22:27

a pair of leggings sent 2nd class as the seller advertised will be no more than £2.20, which is pretty much the standard for a small parcel. I sell kids clothes every week so have a very good idea of the cost. They are totally at it, and they did'nt sell. I wonder why.

So they weren't recorded delivery then?
And what age were they for? I have found in the past it isn't so much the size but the depth of the envelope that has caused the problem. I would prefer to over estimate and not sell than underestimate and sell at a price I would prefer the charity shop to get. It also depends on the person you get on the day at the PO, one day its fine the next it isn't!

picklechops · 07/06/2012 10:39

I'm thinking of starting to sell some bits so reading these threads to glean some knowledge!
I recently bought a kids tee shirt and they sent it in a plastic envelope with nothing more then a second class stamp.
How did they manage that?

ishopthereforeiam · 08/06/2012 02:43

I find ebay's p&p fees very limiting on clothes. As a seller I'm paying over £4.75 to send items out (heavy jackets, suits etc) 2nd class recorded. I do weigh items and use the postage calculator before estimating p&p.

Even if the post is £2.20 I spend money on the stationery, the sellotape without even factoring in any petrol / parking costs etc...

giggly · 08/06/2012 22:36

it is against ebay rules to factor in costs for petrol/ parking etc Smile on your post and packaging costs. You see that what gets me the seller really wanted more for the item but listed as 99p to avoid fee charge so put at least an extra £1.20, that is not a reasonable amount to overcharge.
They were aged 3-4 bog standard leggings, no weights sewn in the legs as far as I could see Hmm

Yesterday I saw a listing for 3 metres of ribbon at 99p with postage of £3.50 !!

As someone who actually sells ribbon else where I know 3 metres of ribbon fits in an envelope as a normal letter, 60p

If someone charges ridiculous postage fees, even if the total price plus postage comes within the limits I'm prepared to pay for something, I just won't entertain them.

I'd rather they charged a few more pounds for the item and the correct postage, to my mind, charging excess postage is like trying to get one over on me.

sarahtigh · 14/06/2012 23:46

buyers get really annoyed at paying 95p extra for recorded which is for sellers benefit not theirs on low value ( ie below £10 items) leggings for 3-4 year old will easily fit in LL category at £1.40 even if pay the whole £2.20 for small packet that is still over charging by £1,30 I think £2.50 would be more than reasonable, mailing bag 10p sellotape for 15cm about 0.3p address label 1p and still a small profit

I have an ebay business and only charge 50p for packing a bone china teapot/ porcelain figurine ( about 18p for flat pack sturdy box, 10p for 40cm bubble wrap 10p for polystrene beads etc 5p covers tape labels fragile stickers etc)so how leggings cost more in packing than porcelain is beyond me

a private seller can not charge for time/ effort in packing or petrol /parking as it is assumed they drop parcels off on way to work/ school shopping a business seller with 30 parcels is probably making a spcial trip

it is just fee avoidance ( they are pulling a fast one)

i agree heavy coats suits would be over ebay P&P limits but couriers will often take them for about £4-5 ie collect+

but the discussion here is small childrens clothes weighing 250g maybe 500g

AdventuresWithVoles · 15/06/2012 19:15

they wanted £3.50

wouldn't bother me.
