Delivery fee cock up

I've listed something on ebay that quite clearly to anyone with eyes in their head cannot be sent through RM.
However I hadn't noticed that i had a default setting of a £3.50 first class delivery for the item.
It does say in the description that I am to be contacted to arrange installation.
The ebayer who has "bought it now" says she doesn't want installation - she wants delivery for £3.50.
The person is 400 miles away from us and the item must weigh 2 tonnes - not exaggerating.
Is there anyway to sort this mess out ?

Does your description say anything about a charge for installation? If not, you might find it harder to resolve, as i would assume that it was included in the price if i was the buyer and it didnt specify, but speak to the EBay helpline first - 0800 3583229 (number from saynoto0870.com, hard to find anything on the eBay site!)

Cancel the sale and live with the neg?

Mosman · 30/05/2012 23:46

Assuming is never a good thing in life generally.
It's not so much the neg as the bloody ebay fees if she won't agree to cancel the sale.

My description said
Installation can be provided for this item at an additional cost.
Please contact us to discuss your requirements.

I honestly don't know how she thought it would go in an envelope and be posted for £3.50, installation has to be part of the deal there is no way it could be delivered and left on her front lawn, just impossible.

what IS it?

i think you need to contact ebay tbh

Mosman · 30/05/2012 23:59

3 tonnes of top soil

well quite frankly i'd be tempted to take the loss and get it delivered and dumped on her doorstep!

i am not sure where you would stand with it tbh. you could argue that it was clearly a mistake in the listing.
but you offered installation as an extra by the sounds of it and she has declined that and just wants the delivery that you had quoted

i would give ebay a ring and see what they suggest

Oh I'd pay good money to see Royal Mail deliver 3 tonnes of top soil by 1st class post - imagine the queue behind you at the post office Grin

Actually I think I'd also contact customer services and see what they say. It's obviously a mistake and clearly one you won't ever make again.

The buyer has either noticed it and bought regardless without drawing your attention to the delivery, or has simply not read your description about contacting them first.

How would you normally deliver the soil ? Is there any way you could manage to do it cheaper than you normally would? I'm assuming you deliver it via a depot local to the buyer.
You may find that you either have to cancel the sale and live with a neutral or neg or deliver it the cheapest way possible and take a hit on the costs.

The loss would be hundreds of pound though other wise I agree it would be mildly amusing.
I've emailed to see if she wants a refund or we can go halves on the real delivery price which is better than nothing i guess.

Where are you? I could do with 3 tonnes of topsoil and it sounds like you do a good delivery rate Grin

sarahtigh · 31/05/2012 15:13

you could just not go through with transaction, losing your final selling fees is probably less than delivering virtuely free, i would cancel sale and put up with negative feedback, you can always reply to negative,

she would win case but losing just one case will not affect feedback too much

the max you can send by first class post is 20kg anyhow

Mosman · 31/05/2012 17:33

I have pointed that out to her lol
We are cancelling it and I don't know if I'll get the final value fee, fingers crossed.
