Seller asking me to complete payment through PayPal directly, not eBay checkout

It seems to be a reputable seller with good feedback, but I got a message yesterday saying the registered eBay address was wrong, and could I please pay through PayPal and avoid eBay checkout process.

I don't understand how a seller who has been registered for years could have a wrong address registered

And wouldn't I lose eBay buyer protection if I don't checkout through eBay?

Yes I think you would. Personally I wouldn't do it as you have no protection if something goes wrong. I suppose it also depends on how much the item is.

No, don't do it

Can I be nosy & ask how much they want for the item? :)

I was selling some stuff last year and used a 'template' for the first item, that I had set up a couple of years before. Then for the other 15 items I clicked 'sell similar item' so I listed them all using that template.

When the auctions were up, the payments all showed as 'pending'. Further investigation showed that the listings had taken the paypal address on the 2 year old template - a Tiscali address that we had not used for a year and had no access to anymore since we went with BT!

Ebay and paypal both said there was nothing they could do. I had to email all the buyers and explain the situation, asked them to check my 100% feedback and would they resend the payment if I sent them a paypal invoice direct.

It was horrible, some were really nice about it, others practically accused me of scamming and said they would send cheques but deducted the price of the stamp, one reported me to ebay etc etc.

In the end I did not loose my 100% feedback because they all got the goods but I'm telling you this so that you know it CAN happen to even the best ebay sellers.

If she has given you any reason like this then I would check out the feedback and send the payment - you are still covered by paypal if you don't receive the goods.

It's not very much, just £10 for a clothes bundle. Scam was the first thought that came to my mind, but it's interesting to read you've been in a similar position fliberty. I think I'll chance it and pay and keep my fingers crossed!!

I had this recently for a winning bid of £12 - got an email from the seller saying there was a problem with her paypal and she had been advised to ivoice me directly. Trouble was I had already sent a payment to her as soon as the bidding ended so was a little Hmm.

Anyway long story short, I phoned paypal direct and they confirmed it was legit and to cancel the first payment and send another on the second invoice - which I did. Now have £12 credit on my Paypal account but thats another story Grin

it happenned to me as seller once they somehow reverted to old email address, just cancel first payment and then pay via paypal you still have protection through paypal, it would be perfectly acceptable to pay all as paypal invoices

if generally good feedback i would say system glitch and not pronblem

It's happened to me as a seller too as I logged in in my dh's 'side' of the computer rather than my own and a PayPal address from when we lived in a different country was stored in the selling template and I didn't notice.

So although I had been actively selling for years in between, I had been using my own side of the computer ad I had changed it in that template.

I had to contact the buyers and one of them refused to change the payment as she thought I was dodgy.
