Buyer in Hungary

Have been on Ebay for years as a buyer, but decided to use free listings this weekend to try selling a few bits.

I have almsot immediately had an email from Hungary asking for a shipping estimate, though my listing clearly states UK postage only.

Is this common? Is it ok to just reiterate it's a UK only sale or is it worth investigating postage for them?

I've got a few bits on ebay at the moment.
I send everything tracked, and keep to the uk.

I've had someone from Russia wanting to buy a pair of shoes off me, but I have no idea what the postal service is like over there, so i've said no.

I know a lot of people do post to Europe etc, but i'd be too scared of things going missing.

I send loads of stuff abroad and have never had a problem. You will get much better sales if you are prepared to do it, it is very little extra hassle, you just get the prices of off the Royal Mail postage finder.

doradoo · 13/05/2012 14:52

It really get's my goat that people won't post overseas - what's the actual problem - do you assume that the Royal Mail is the gold standard of all postal systems (ha ha ha) and that anything 'abroad' will not work......

Give people overseas an estimate - bump it up a bit for safety and then if they still want to bid so be it. FWIW I am overseas and often want to buy from ebay UK as I want specific English items - things which I know/trust/am used to and whilst many buyers don't want the hassle of is - which IMHO is no more hassle than posting anything to the UK at the post office - it's a PITA if you're buting from overseas. I've never had any problems with non-delivery of items.

I wouldn't, not if I was new to selling.

veryconfusedatthemoment · 13/05/2012 14:59

Please remember that tracked mail cannot be tracked beyond UK boundaries. So If I am sending abroad I always obtain proof of posting but do make it very clear that items lost in the post are not my responsibility. I reiterate on every correspondence the length of time the post might take. I do find if I sell brand names (eg beauty gwp) I am innundated with mail requests from eastern european countries and I won't send those.

These small restrictions have helped me so far send successfully abroad with good feedback.

I have sold quite a lot to Germany, Hungary, Oz, US, Lithuania, Poland and NZ recently, with no prob. The only time parcels have gone missing was with domestic parcels.

Iwannamovenow · 13/05/2012 15:39

My parents live in Spain and my sister lives in Eire, lots of cards and parcels have gone missing over the years, so I choose not to send anything of value abroad anymore.

GobblersKnob · 13/05/2012 16:52

veryconfusedatthemoment it doesn't matter what you say on your listings, items lost in the post are always the responsibility of the seller and any buyer can just open a dispute and get a refund if the item doesn't arrive.

fergoose · 13/05/2012 17:22

it is the sellers responsibility to get the item to the buyer - stating it is not your responsibility is incorrect.

sarahtigh · 15/05/2012 17:49

I send approximately a third of my sales abroad, looking a big picture over several months no more likely to go missing than in UK, that said I sell collectables and vintage/ antiques not technology or designer stuff

but i just get price list from post office and weigh and price accordingly

things go missing mostly when in last part of journey the biggest risk is where persons mail box at end is not secure ie left in communal hall or is a multi occupancy house

it does not matter how you send you have to refund if it does not arrive it is always the sellers job to claim from royal mail not buyers, there are still silly people out there on ebay saying they will send proof of posting to you for you to claim but they are not responsible for loss or breakages in post well they just are

I would send to hungary you can only stop them by selecting block biddrrs in countries i do not post to in criteria saying it on listing may help but is not binding

PatFenis · 16/05/2012 21:50

I have never had a problem sending items to Hungary, they have always arrived in good time. A lot of my buyers are from Hungary, Croatia, Estonia, Lithuania etc and have never had an item go missing in 7 yrs of selling - maybe I have just been very lucky!

sarahtigh · 17/05/2012 19:52

to be honest i have more arrive back on my doorstep as undelivarable because folks forget to change address on ebay/ paypal and wonder why i sent to their old address than things go missing (well its because i'm psychic and sent to old address to annoy... )

I think out of 800-900 sales only 2 parcels have been completely lost , most go astray because of incorrect address or like one work address home postcode confused courier for weeks

some poeple here seem to have very diffeent experiences but mine is that 93% of time things arrive when expected ( ie first class next day/day after and second class within 3-4 working days most airmail in under 2 weeks); a further 5% late; 1% returned to sender and less than 1% go missing

lololizzy · 19/05/2012 13:26

do trackable only as everythng i've ever sent to poland, ukraine and czech republic has got lost / stolen / not turned up. And i mean, EVERY time
