Frustrated with Royal Mail

Hi All,

I'm fairly new to Mumsnet but since I've joined I've been a heavy duty lurker on this forum - love it! I've been an ebayer for the past 7 years but dip in and out of it, usually capitalising on the free listing weekends because I begrudge paying listing fees when I get hammered with final value and paypal, it makes a time consuming exercise selling for peanuts.

Early April I managed to sell a few of my nicer dresses including a stunning one that I wanted to keep but thought the money would be far more useful at the moment. I sent it recorded and it's still in the system (i.e. lost) 15 days later. I feel really fed up with RM because they lost some framed prints of my children I sent to family at Christmas and I had to jump through so many hoops to get a refund, nor were they concerned that images of children were unaccounted for. I can't help but feel something shifty is going on at my post office for me to have been so "unlucky." I'd like to vote with my feet and go with a different carrier but in my experience couriers have been dearer and though I have used myhermes for larger items, when you factor in insurance for £40+ items and a signature, it would be a lot more expensive than Royal Mail.

For those who post regularly have you had similar issues or do you use any other carriers?

I use collect plus more often now - easy and cheap and much more reliable.

You say the item is lost, but maybe the postie just didn't bother getting a signature, or has the buyer said it has not arrived?

The buyer said it hasn't arrived.

I feel stuck in no man's land at the moment because I would like to refund the buyer but am not sure that would be the best course of action in case RM recover the parcel, deliver it and then I am out of pocket from the refund and in no position to receive a claim for loss. Initially I was going to claim for delay because a week later it hadn't arrived (1st class recorded), I don't know whether that would be included in a loss claim?

I'll check out Collect Plus, thanks for recommending it.

after 15 working days, 3 weeks, it will be considered lost so you should refund the buyer and claim from royal mail. I don't know if you can claim for delay can you?

F4ttyBumBum · 25/04/2012 14:12

So even if it is recovered after 15 days (because it's tracked) I would still get reimbursed for its value from RM? I just don't want to get stung because with my previous dealings from them they tried everything they could to avoid reimbursing me and I could imagine them using an instance like this as a get out.

No idea - I guess you will have to ask royal mail.
