Why two bids, one price?

This is probably basic stuff, I don't know, but it has puzzled me for a while! When you (I) put something up for sale on eBay, if there is only one buyer, what I see on the selling page is - 2 bids, with the price standing as it was when I set up the sale - ie someone is going to pay the minimum asking price at this stage.

Why does it show two bids, though?

because the buyer put in 2 bids, but no one outbid them so they bought it at the lowest price.

Yes, but fergoose - oh, I think I see what you mean - or do I? you're saying that if someone else comes along and bids, their (the bidder I'm talking about's) secret higher bid will then show?

But at the moment, the sale I'm thinking of is still live, so I still don't see why two bids at the same price are showing, both from the same person..

Yes exactly - but nobody has come along to bid again so their first bid still stands. So say buyer bid 99p then came back and thought oh put another bid for £2, then if nobody comes and bids higher than 99p their first bid will win the auction and their £2 proxy bid wouldn't be used.

Hello again fergoose. Kind of you to put me out of my misery! Not important knowledge, - but I REALLY wanted to understand what was going on, and now I do.

Thank you for your time and trouble!
