We want to put our car on ebay, is it better to have it as an auction or as a classified ad? We want to advertise it on other sites aswell so what about if it sells somewhere else, If i cancel the listing will we still be charged anything?

Any advise would be appreciated.

we sold my last car on ebay last summer
got 300 more than garage offered

sold as auction its a standard fee of about £8 insertion with 12 free photos
front back both sides one of mileage, mention everything like a few stonechips as expected with age photo of scratches dents, say if CD plater does not work, wash it and vacuum first say if smoke and pet free photo of drivers seat to show wear or lack off

if does not sell no final fees

well generally on ebay finishing auction early if frowned on this is not so in cars/ farm machinery etc

people will want to discuss it so either include your mobile number or give it when they message and say viewers welcome

some watchers are just that lots of dealers gauging prices so 10 watchers does not a sale make

do not start auction at £1000 if not prepared to accept, most folks do not like unknown reserves as first ? will be what is reserve
start at minimum you will accept

if someone turns up to view with reasonable offer for cash just take it even if you have 50 watchers

only take cash, or get transfer done in bank no cheque and definitely no paypal

be prepared for someone to win and not turn up to collect so include a statement

"contact to be made within 2 hours of auction ending in all cases car must be paid for and collected within 7 days"

don't hide reg number as people will want to check MOT history on line and possibly check you have no HP or loans etc

bidding still happens in last seconds but early bids are more common as some know that if cash buyer comes along when there are no bids it will be withdrawn from auction

you can cancel bids and remove from auction upto 12 hours before end

sorry long msg

We have sold two cars on ebay successfully.

One was a Y reg, head gasket had gone, so I put all this info and more in the add, ie: you need a tow truck - will not start, cannot be driven away, etc. Sold it for £350, when garage told me to scrap it for £80. Buyer was a mechanic who was going to do it up.

The other was a T reg estate, still going strong, we just didnt need two cars anymore. Bidders were fighting over it. Sold it for £600.

Assume that idiots will read your add and word it accordingly !.
Make sure you take the maximum number of photos.
Put it to auction and dont accept any buy it now offers, they are from people trying to get a cheap bargain.

Make sure if you take cash, you check and count it before even getting the car keys out.

Thankyou, We will start it at the lowest we would be prepared to take for it. Have taken lots of pics. Aslong as we don't get charged if it doesn't sell then we have nothing to lose.

Like SP0104 we sold a car with the fuel gasket gone and got about £300 which was preferable to paying to have it scrapped. We were very happy with the transaction. We have also successfully bought a car on eBay in an auction which DH is still happily driving 6 years later. It's a nice car too and not a banger.

Good luck.

Just to reiterate a couple of things that people have already mentioned:

-there's no guarantee that the winning bidder will make contact or turn up to actually buy it so you may have to go through ebays non-paying bidder process

  • even if the winning bidder does turn up they might not have taken on board what was in the listing eg. will ask about tax/MOT even though you clearly stated it in the listing

(both of these examples taken from a friends recent experience when he sold his car on ebay)

Yes, I sold a car on eBay, for £300. The garage wouldn't take it as part exchange as it was so knackered but the said we might get £300 in an actual auction. I couldn't face doing that so took the eBay option.

A few photos from all round and total honesty about the state if the car and why I was selling on eBay. I actually think I put it on a £50, so it was a success!

As it was only going to go for a low price, we did smudge out the registration plate.

Took cash, didn't hand over keys until checked. Obviously no test drive! He knew where we lived so he could always come back if he thought it was not as described.

you will only be charged listing fee if it does not sell as the £8 listing fee is not refundable but you may pay more to put in auto trader, you could also try gumtree, ( put it on at a fixed price but expect to be haggled down about 10% ) we bought a van that way

sarahtigh · 08/03/2012 19:31

personally I would consider a BIN if you start it at say £1500 hoping to get £2000 you would be silly not to consider a BIN of £1800 as you might let auction run and only get £1500, but obviously if some one asks to get for £1300 cash today well you turn it down,

grograg · 08/03/2012 20:03

oh crap, i have just listed it. If it doesn't sell we will have to pay nearly £15 :(
I don't even have 15 bloody pence :(

I sold a Peugeot 306 R-reg last year for £900. I had phoned around and was offered less than £600. Then I spoke to my Uncle (he's got lots of friends in the trade) and he said there was no way we would get £900 because there would be no profit for the dealer.

I put it on ebay with a £900 BiN, £700 starting bid. I had an enquiry - a couple came to look/test drive. They were happy and asked to do the Buy it Now.

They used my PC to complete the BIN bid on ebay and transfer the paypal payment. Then they drove the car away Grin

I sold my Nissan Qashqai a couple of weeks ago. I did a classified ad, took loads of pictures and just listed it.
I must admit I wasn't desperate to sell it and decided that we'd list it once and if it didn't sell we'd keep it.

It sold within 5 days for £1300 more than Webuyanycar had offered, the classified ad cost £15

Tonksforthememories · 17/03/2012 13:37

We sold an N reg golf lat year for £260 + listing fee. It was a complete rust bucket but the bloke who bought it was going to break it for parts. He got in contact on the 3rd day and although we already had a bidder we closed the listing early.

What we got covered the insurance on the new car! We were offered less than £50 to scrap it.
