My dh has just bought a camera from a company on eBay. Brand new, accessories and warranty etc. He didn't notice that the seller was in Hong Kong. We've just been emailed to say there might be import tax to pay when it arrives. They said they'll declare it to be of less value and that it's a gift. Sounds a bit dodgy to me. Are we likely to get stung? It cost over £400. I do hope it's not fake or a tax dodge.

yes it is dodgy to make false declaration. Maybe you could cancel the sale and buy from a UK seller instead. If it is faulty you will have to send back tracked which could cost a lot of money.

It could end up costing a fair bit on tax (a friend bought something that was £70 in import tax).
I would cancel the purchase as you've been misled.

If they declare that it of lower value then you probably wouldn't be insured for the full amount should it go missing. Agree with fergoose - cancel the sale.

That's kind of confirmed what I thought. Have emailed them asking them to cancel the transaction. Thanks all.

This happened to my dad and he got in contact with PayPal who said they would take issue but only after 10 days to give time to the company to honour the contract. I googled the company and found lots of negative feedback similar to that you have described. Surprisingly it turned up and without any tax to pay - weird and we won't be ordering from hong knot again!!
