Have just sold my first 3 items on ebay and have a few questions.

All my payments have gone through paypal but they all seem to be incurring a fee of about 80p-£1 is that right, and is that for oaypal services?
Secondly i am selling stuff to help pay off my credit card (which i use to buy stuff on my paypal account), so how do i transfer the money from paypal to my card?
when sending items do they need to be packaged nicely? By that i mean wrapping handbags in tissue paper etc?
As soon as payment shows on paypal can i send the item?
Is it safe to use 1st/2nd class post rather than a courier?

Sorry for o many questions [smie]

Yes, you get charged a fee for using paypal
On paypal you will have had to set up your bank account details, you transfer the money to your account and then pay off cc
If it is an expensive item then nice wrapping can help get you good feeedback. Main thing is to ensure it is protected against damage if delicate (bubble wrap etc.)
Re postage, on your listing you will have offered an amount for a specific service - did you choose courier, 2nd or first class? Recorded or not? If a choice, you will see which option the buyer has chosen and how much they have paid for P&P

Good luck with paying of the cc bill! Smile

I would send recorded, special or courier if any value - otherwise buyer can claim to not receive and claim their money back. Recorded only covers up to £46 so any more than this will need special or courier

Ok i have more questions sorry Smile

i have obviously added my bank account details to paypal because thats the only way to transfer money.
However when i went to list a brand new branded item on ebay tonight it said i couldnt because my account wasnt verified with paypal. It will let me list used items though.
So do i have to verify my ebay account with paypal and vice versa, i just dont want money going in and out of my bank willy nilly without me having much control.
The other worrying thing is that in my ebay account thing (didnt even know i had one). It said i owed £5.59, i paid it from paypal because i thought that was stopping me from listing the trainers but now it says i owe another £2.75

Ive only sold 3 items ever, and have probably listed bout 6 items altogether in the last few years. Any idea what these charges are?

Am baffledConfused

eBay fees will be listing and final value fees

you will need to verify your account with Paypal, log in at paypal.co.uk then click on money and take it from there

mosschops30 · 02/03/2012 19:41

But will ebay and paypal be able to take money from my bank account?
I have quite a strict budget on my current account so that wont work for me.

Also about postage, i have listed items as 2nd class delivery, but when i took the items to the post office i coud send them recorded for the same price as i ad advertised, is that a problem? I just guessed £3.00, was something like £3.29 so i just paid the extra

OP posts:

No, they can't take money without your permission if that is what you are worried about

postage isn't a problem no - you are wise to send recorded. Next time weigh at home and use post office website to get an idea of what you should charge so you aren't out of pocket maybe?

From your eBay you can add tracking info onto the items you have sold if you wish - there should be that option in the arrow drop down bit next to the item itself.

mosschops30 · 02/03/2012 19:54

Im sorry for being really dumb, i still dont get the paypal thing, in the past its only had my credit card which us find.
It now says if i want to verify my account i have to set up a direct debit so i can pay out of my bank, but i dont want to ever do this.

OP posts:

as far as i know if you want to withdraw money from paypal you need to withdraw it to a bank account

smackapacca · 02/03/2012 20:10

Yes you do - I did this last week.

Put your bank account details in.
PayPal with take money from your PP balance and transfer it to your current account. It'll be for 2 tiny amounts (mine were 2p and 5p)
Once you see them in your current account, you can be confident the accounts are linked correctly. You log in to PP, say the amounts received and voila. Accounts are then linked!

It is quite straightforward, honest.

mosschops30 · 02/03/2012 20:42

But then when im paying for stuff online with paypal will it take from my bank account?

OP posts:
smackapacca · 02/03/2012 20:43

It'll take from PayPal first then your bank account. I think

I had £20 in PP. Paid £25 for something. £20 from PP, £5 came from bank account.

I guess you want it to come off credit card though?

LineRunner · 02/03/2012 20:52

Thanks for this thread - I'm hoping to get started on Ebay (with my DCs) and am clueless. Smile

mosschops30 · 03/03/2012 12:10

Yes thats right, in fact i want everything to come off my card regardless of how much i have in paypal.
Will have to email them i think and see what they say.

OP posts:
fergoose · 03/03/2012 12:21

You can't do that i don't think - you will need to withdraw the paypal funds to your bank account first.

mosschops30 · 03/03/2012 12:41

Oh yes ive done that already, what i mean is that if i buy something online through paypal i want it to come off my cc not out my current account

OP posts:
fergoose · 03/03/2012 12:48

don't you just then make your credit card primary source then?

WhenDoISleep · 04/03/2012 11:18

yes - you should be able to make your cc your primary funding source. Also, whenever you pay via paypal, you will see a confirmation screen which will detail where the funds are being taken from - there will be a link to change it if it is not the funding source that you want to use.
