Idiot guide for someone who has just a few items

Have been reading through this topic and have looked at the ebay sellers guide. There seem to be so many things to consider! I have never sold anything through ebay, although have purchased many things over many years. I have a few clothing/shoes items which are mainly NWT or NWOT, not posh, just Next, M&S etc. Any best pieces of advice? I know to: list carefully, use lots of descriptive words, end auction Sat/Sun evening, check postage beforehand (esp on the shoes), take good pictures. What can I expect to go wrong?

hi, not sure what the best advice is, but try and check out their forum for sellers, it does have lots of tips on it, well worth a look. a good question to ask yourself is "what do you want to get for these items?" it may just be that you want a bit extra cash, but watch out for the 99p entries, sometimes this is all you get for things, so if your hoping for £5+ and have advertised free or low postage it will end up that you are out of pocket, yet by putting on the actual true postage, some people will avoid it if its too high. I sold a few items on ebay, wasnt very successful though, i couldnt get this tweek right lol. im sure somebody will come on here and give you some better tips though (and possibly me too ;-) )
best of luck

Yes, I get the impression that sometimes people get obsessed with the free listing and it would be much better to pay the tiny amount to start at a slightly higher price.

Look at 'completed listings' for similar items and how much they made, before bothering to do anything! many clothes just don't sell.
For clothes, may be worth spending £5 on a pack of plastic mailing bags on ebay, so can then charge low postage.

I've just sold some stuff on there, and I forget how much hassle it is. I now only post 2nd class recorded. I've literally made a couple of quid. Nice that it all adds up but I think I'll just charity shop stuff from now on.

Sorry - that wasn't very helpful!

I think you've got all bases covered though.

Make sure you specify about returns and whether you'll post abroad too.

oooh, as you have just mentioned about paying for your listings, watch out for when ebay asks how many listings you would like to advertise in, it sometimes ends up that to list something in extra catagories, with enlarged size picks etc costs about £3+ , which is ok if what your selling is worth alot, but not if thats more than the item makes

Thank you all, can't decide whether it's worth it or not!

sometimes it isnt worth it....but if you stagger what you put on, and when then you are only going to shell out bits of money at a time, so may not miss it greatly...but the great thing is it will all add up rather nicely into your paypal account. This is how i used my account, and it was a great way of banking little bits at a time and so when i saw something i liked i could bid without thinking "when do i get paid?"
Oh, and just bare in mind that the new rules for new sellers are once you have sold an item and the buyer has paid you, Ebay/paypal will not release this money for upto 21 days! the only ways round this are if the buyer leaves positive feedback, (sometimes they dont leave any at all) or when your feedback score as a seller reaches 10. so they can see that your posting out and not just collecting in money.
I did buy a few items for peanuts and sold them for £3.20 free post brand new with tags! i made about 60p profit lol. but it was £3.20 into an account for me to treat the kids. Do that a couple of times and before you know it its treats all round lol

Have a go. Do your Research over the next couple of weeks, take photos in good light, write your description, weigh your item and then you will be ready for the next Free Listing Weekend. You can then start your listing at any price for free and see how it goes.....
