Hi I sold an item yesterday and the buyer mailed me to say that their paypal card won't work and could they have my sort code and account number to transer straight into my account.
The buyer doesnt have any feedback!
bit iffy or not?

Iffy. Don't do it. They can always send a cheque, and you could wait til it went through. Or a postal order.

you are perfectly safe to give your bank details - is only sort code and account number which are on a cheque anyway. eBay sellers are glad to receive bank transfers, it is free, and the buyer can't claw back the money at a later date.

Allboxedin · 13/02/2012 18:39

ok, it just concerns me as the seller has no feedback at all? Maybe they are just new to it.

the buyer not having feedback doesn't necessarily mean anything - everyone has to start somewhere.

It wouldn't have any bearing on a bank transfer payment anyway.

Send the item special/recorded/courier with online proof of delivery and then you are covered is my advice.

I wouldn't

Beckyboo4 · 20/02/2012 13:07

I wouldn't as they have your name and address and then your bank details. I never accept bank transfers as a rule.

fergoose · 20/02/2012 14:03

but them having your sort code and account number doesn't mean they can use them - accepting a bank transfer is perfectly safe. It is the same info which is on a cheque you would write.

BeanutPutter · 20/02/2012 14:06

But in this case Fergoose you are not making a payment you are receiving one. I understand EBay say it is ok but personally I wouldn't do it.

Ask the buyer to write a cheque, sort out their card or send a postal order.

fergoose · 20/02/2012 14:28

but what are you saying the buyer is going to use the details for - i don't understand the concern?

Agree with fergoose. My dmil gets card insurance with her new bank account, but she won't register her cards as she has to send sort code and account numbers in the post-which she thinks will allow everyone to buy houses on line with her cards

BeanutPutter · 20/02/2012 15:47

I would just be uneasy with someone having my name, address, sort-code and account number. Especially if they were new to eBay and had no feedback.

I have sold a couple of phones on there and perhaps it is because of my experiences with that. Neither time I listed did I actually manage to sell the first two times due to various oversea scammers wasting my time. I am just much more cautious than I used to be with eBay.

fergoose · 20/02/2012 17:44

Yes, but what would you expect someone to do with those details? I don't understand the paranoia to be honest - if they managed to set up a direct debit you could claim the money back. It's not like they have your PIN is it? If they are a new or old eBay makes absolutely no difference whatsoever. And buyers' feedback is totally irrelevant, they can't receive negs so to be honest their feedback is pretty worthless.

If you are selling high risk mobile phones then you have to be careful regarding scam buyers, but if you follow procedure and block international bidders first etc, you can protect yourself from them.
