Delivering fragile items. Royal Mail or courier?

How do you normally send fragile items through the post if that isn't a daft question? Is it more expensive to send with a courier? For example, if I've packed it well and it weighs less than 1kg could I still send it 2nd class recorded or would you not risk it getting damaged and pay for a courier?

Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

As a buyer I really dislike courier because I have to be in and sign for it. Where I live (when I'm in the UK) the Royal Mail postpeople are very good at hiding parcels in the porch, behind the side gate, in the neighbours' porches, and all. Couriers ring the doorbell once for a nanosecond and then drive away to hide the parcel in a depot twenty miles away.

Ask your buyer what they'd prefer.

If you pack it well, then post will be fine. I have bought and sold china on eBay and used Royal Mail.

check with royal mail though - you aren't covered for glass or jewellery unless special delivery I think so make sure you are properly covered or you could be out of pocket if broken in transit.
