I was looking at this earlier as it is exactly what i wanted and at a bargain price too , the seller wanted cash on collection . I was going to email seller to see if she would accept paypal if i added something to cover the fees , left the page open on the laptop and ds has somehow managed to buy it . What would you do ? shall i ask her about the paypal anyway ? or offer to pay for another listing ?

Why would you need to pay by paypal rather than cash? i'm assuming you can pick it up if there's no postage available.

Scarydragontalk · 01/12/2011 13:44

I would just message her and ask her, every ebayer (except one) that i've been in contact with has been lovely and understanding about things like that, and I've been using it since 2004!

frumpet · 01/12/2011 13:47

schobe the problem is its nowhere near me , but DH is up and down the m1 like a yoyo and thought i could ask him to collect it ,but was going to check this with her first . The problem is im cash poor ,but paypal rich at the moment . I really dont want to mess her about so i think i might just grovel and offer to pay relisting fees .

My DS has done this before with a tin robot. Hmm

At least yours has bought something you actually wanted Grin.

I would email and ask her. If she is wanting to save on seller fees through paypaland that's why she is asking for the cash, suggest sending it as 'gift' - no paypal fees then!

My dd2 has managed to get into my account and buy 3 things, each time i have e-mailed the seller and explained the situation and they have cancelled the sale. Most people are very understanding, dd2 clicked 'buy it now' on some toys last week from America, the postage was higher than the toy, luckily the seller was lovely and let us off.

frumpet · 01/12/2011 13:59

Right have emailed her , so fingers crossed she is nice !

a seller should never take paypal for a collection only item as you could collect it and then claim to not have received it and then claim back your money - so don't be surprised if they say no

why can't he just pay cash when collecting it?

FairyOnTheXmasTreeMcFlouncer · 01/12/2011 16:36

Because the Op is short of cash but has plenty of Paypal funds.

FabbyChic · 01/12/2011 18:28

Id not take PayPal for a collection item, it is not safe to do so.

Withdraw the money to your bank account then go collect it.

frumpet · 01/12/2011 20:15

Unfortunately i cant do that as i have a building society account ,makes me sound ancient i know , got it about ten years ago when i had got into bother with my bank account due to ex , quite like it because i cant go overdrawn and the ladies who work there are lovely !

I had never thought about the claiming not to have recieved the item scam ,being an honest sort of person , good to know if i list anything that needs collecting though .

fergoose · 01/12/2011 20:28

Not inferring that you are dishonest by the way - but that is the reason sellers will want cash on collection :)

Can you not add another bank account to paypal, or get the money sent to your building society account?

thisisyesterday · 01/12/2011 20:33

can you not just withdraw the money from your paypal account?

Marne · 01/12/2011 20:33

I thought sellers had to accept paypal these days? I have been selling and buying for years and have taken paypal many times for collection/pick up only. A lot of people would rather pay by paypal as they can claim there money back if they get the item home and it falls appart or doesn't work. I would happily take paypal, i would prefer cash (as anyone would) but am not bothered if they prefer to use paypal.

thisisyesterday · 01/12/2011 20:34

also, from the other side of the coin.... if you pay with cash the seller could say you haven't paid.... so it goes both ways

fergoose · 01/12/2011 20:37

yes well if you pay by paypal and open a not as described dispute you have to return your collected item by trackable means to get a refund which if possible can cost a fortune

sellers do need to accept paypal but you are allowed to ask for cash on collection.

AWimbaAllTheWay · 01/12/2011 20:41

Like Marne I thought sellers had to accept paypal.

frumpet · 01/12/2011 21:52

Have hopefully resolved the situation by refunding her listing fees ,plus a bit extra as felt guilty Smile

OP posts:
fergoose · 01/12/2011 21:56

your seller can cancel the transaction with you to get her final value fees back

frumpet · 01/12/2011 22:09

will send her a message telling her that fergoose ,dont want her to be out of pocket at all .

OP posts:
fergoose · 01/12/2011 22:12

Well you've done all you can - can't say fairer than that :) Don't worry about it.

squeakytoy · 03/12/2011 15:22

if you pay with cash the seller could say you haven't paid

But you wouldnt part with the goods until someone paid if they were paying cash, so how can that work? Confused

fergoose · 03/12/2011 15:46

a deceitful seller could pretend you didn't buy the item to get their final value fees back I guess?
