Describing something as "new"

Bought a toy for dd to replace a toy I thought was broken, turned out on opening the second one we'd just been putting it together wrong doh!

So, i'm going to sell the new one on ebay but not sure if I can list it as new when the box has been opened? (obviously cant take it back to the store for the same reason).

Isn't there an option for 'New: Other'? I think you can then explain that it is new, but has been taken out of the box.

I couldn't see one picnic, I just noticed on other people's listings that new is described as undamaged, unopened etc and dont want to break any rules or risk neg feedback.

It's still new- is the box damaged? I work in a toy shop and we sell things that have been taken out of the box. It doesn't alter their newness :)

Hmm, maybe it's just in certain sections of eBay then. I think to be on the safe side, I would choose the Used option but just explain the condition in the listing really - 'not been played with but has been taken out of box' or similar. People can be really picky about stuff like that, especially if you listed it as new and someone wanted it to look perfect for an Xmas gift etc.

TheFrogs · 26/11/2011 20:19

The box was taped peeriebear so a little of the picture has come off where the tape was, I did it very carefully but it still took it off.

So if I listed it as "used" could I then write "new" in the header as well as in the description? I wanted to put it on a buy it now and try to get my money back really.

What about listing as new without box - then you could state box has been opened but will be included and the toy is brand new and unused.

TheFrogs · 26/11/2011 20:28

I dont think I can fergoose, it only comes up with an option for "used" or "new" and the "new" is described as unopened when I preview the listing..does that make sense? (confusing myself here!)

well it is new isn't it - just state new with damaged box I reckon. As long as your description is detailed and accurate I am sure you will be fine.

fergoose · 26/11/2011 20:38

Oh and take clear photos of the box too if possible so buyer is well aware it has been opened.

PrimaBallerina · 26/11/2011 21:46

I'd say new any just explain in the description what you've said here. That makes it very clear to buyers. They won't mind.

gemma4d · 26/11/2011 21:51

Def go for new - it is, after all - and put details in the listing.

ballstoit · 26/11/2011 21:52

I agree, list as new, but explain in the description exactly what damage there is to the box. As long as you are honest in your description, the buyer has no come back Smile

Does something with the tags still attached but has been sitting in the wardrobe for a couple of years unworn still count as new?

What would be the best description for its condition if there are no flaws and looks new?

Ben10WasTheSpawnNowWeLoveLego · 27/11/2011 08:17

Boogie That is definitely BNWT brand new with tags! It is in unused condition - that is normally what new means rather than this season's IYSWIM.

boogiewoogie · 27/11/2011 17:02

Okay thanks Ben, that's helpful.
