I saw an item on ebay and posted a bid. It had been on for a week and mine was the only bid so far. Then I sent the seller a question.

A day and a bit later the seller replies to my question and within two minutes of her email a new bidder has appeared put in a big new bid that just happens to be 5p higher than my maximum bid. And there is still 24 hours left to go in the auction.

Yea sounds a bit dodge. I bet if "that" bidder wins, you'll get a 2nd chance offer.....

TragicallyHip · 07/04/2011 20:30

Not really, sounds more like a coincidence. Was the question anything to do with the bids/price?

Ah yes the other bidder could have put 10 pounds but if you had only bid 5 pounds max it would show as 5 pounds 5 pence.

Sorry dodgy keyboard and no pound sign!

People watch and bid at the last minute. The last thing that I sold someone had a lone bid for about 5 days-what they didn't know was that 10 people were watching and a bidding war broke out in the last few hours. I never make a bid until the final day, if I am not going to be around at the end I bid the highest I would go to but it will only show up as a small amount over the last bid.

Anice · 07/04/2011 20:41

but its not last minute. there is still another day to go.

Coincidence.

TragicallyHip · 07/04/2011 20:59

I really don't think the bidding has anything to do with your email.

MorticiaAddams · 07/04/2011 21:04

It just sounds like a coincidence. The seller won't know your maximum bid, only you do.

saoirse86 · 09/04/2011 19:43

The thing about how much higher the next bid is depends on how much it is. For example, if your max bid was 99p, then someone bid £10, it'd show as £1.04 (I think that's right). If your max bid was £50 and theirs was £100, it'd show as £51 (I think, maybe £55). They would have to actually bid £50.04 for it to come up as that. Basically it automatically goes up in certain stages at different price brackets.

I really wouldn't be surprised if they had seen your message, replied, then called their friend to put in a bid so that your bid went higher and they'd get more money.

I have known people to do this so it's really not paranoia!

Not everyone is as honest as us! Grin
