Better to sell items like Boden childrens clothing in batches or individually?

I need to sell a lot of items quickly due to an imminent move overseas. I've never sold clothes on eBay before.

Would you recommend selling in batches (e.g 3 tops together - not talking bulk buys), or individually? All higher quality clothing, such as Boden, Gap etc

I prefer buying in batches myself as a buyer. I less posting. :)

fanjolina · 01/04/2011 13:15

Thanks chuckeyegg. I tend to buy like that too.

Individually, you'll make more money.

fanjolina · 01/04/2011 13:57

Thanks Jareth - that's good to know

People pay stupid money for individual items on ebay. I've bought stuff half price in the Boden sale before and been able to sell it on for the same money. Even I Some idiot paid £11.50 for some boys trousers the other day Blush

I regularly get £10 each for tops/t-shirts.

fanjolina · 01/04/2011 18:34

I've done that too

Really?

OP posts:
JarethTheGoblinKing · 01/04/2011 19:12

Yep Grin

Best ones were a load of t-shirts that I bought for £7 each in the sale, went for £10 plus on ebay. Mugs Wink

On the other hand, I have 2 lovely boys tops on there at the moment, and not so much as a sniff at the moment

fanjolina · 01/04/2011 20:06

How long do you put them on for? Is 3 days too short?

I have read all the advice about 10 day postings over 2 Sundays but tbh, whenever I go on ebay I only ever look at the next 24 hours at most. I'm rather impatient!

OP posts:
JarethTheGoblinKing · 01/04/2011 20:26

Everything goes on for 7 days, and tbh I don't find it makes that much difference what day I put things on :)

melpomene · 01/04/2011 20:32

You couild list them individually but link each one to your other listings and offer to combine postage - best of both worlds.

EldonAve · 01/04/2011 20:34

10 days is best

fanjolina · 01/04/2011 20:50

good idea melpomene

I don't think I can do 10 days Eldon, as then we'll be on holiday when the auctions end. Its a nightmare planning when I can list them.

OP posts:
JarethTheGoblinKing · 01/04/2011 20:53

You can schedule the start time of the listing whenever you want, so could plan it to end a couple of days after you're back from your holiday? You pay a small fee though.

Definitely link them all together, and state that you will combine postage.

like this Wink

JarethTheGoblinKing · 01/04/2011 20:54

Also bear in mind that people can take a WHILE to pay sometimes, so if you are listing before you go away make sure you put in the lsiting that you need cleared payment before a certain date (just don't advertise that you're going on holiday!)

fanjolina · 01/04/2011 20:54

Ooh, I didn't know you could schedule times. That should help me get organised. And grr to people who don't pay instantly!

OP posts:
saoirse86 · 05/04/2011 11:15

If you want people who pay instantly, advertise on the for sale board on here. You can upload your photos and put how much you want and whether that's with or without postage.

You might find that people aren't willing to pay as much as on ebay but you'll get your money straight away if you give your paypal address.

If there's baby girl stuff I'll be there

Good luck, and have a nice holiday! Smile

Boden sell on its own.

Gap works well as outfits if you have jeans ans a sweatshirt combinations.

Other stuff I think works well as small bundles.

fanjolina · 05/04/2011 20:56

Well I'm not having great luck selling on ebay - gorgeous GAP, Monsoon etc clothes going unsold (and with v low start prices). A lot of effort for very little reward!

saoirse - is it worth paying the £10 to sell on here then? Is there enough of a market. I have LOADS of girls clothes. All so beautiful.

OP posts:
JarethTheGoblinKing · 05/04/2011 23:43

fanjolina - feel like linking to your ebay stuff? I'm clearly not an expert but a fresh pair of eyes on the listings might help?

fanjolina · 06/04/2011 07:35

Thanks Jareth.

Here's an example of an item that didn't sell:
Monsoon dress

OP posts:
JarethTheGoblinKing · 07/04/2011 09:50

I can't see any reason why that wouldn't have sold.. only thing would be to start on 99p I guess (I've found that starting on more than that can put people off for stuff like this)

Stick a link at the bottom of your listings to the rest of your listings too, I've made a lot of combined sales doing this (some people don't always bother to click through to your name, then find your items - easier for them just to follow a link)
:)

seeker · 07/04/2011 10:13

I would have started an 99p too. I think some people only look at 99p starts. And it's odd, but once you've got one bid you tend to get more.

fanjolina · 07/04/2011 10:40

I didn't realise it made such a difference starting at 99p. I thought most people did that to avoid insertion fees, but as it was a free listing weekend I didn't have that issue.

Even stuff I started at lower prices didn't sell for much - here's another example: monsoon top

Tbh, if I am only getting £1.49 for tops that cost £20 new and only worn a few times,t hen I am as well off putting them to the charity shop.

I will look into putting links at the bottom of my listing Jareth, though even without it, most of the sales I did make were multiple purchases

Hi, i sell a lot of childrens clothes on e-bay (registered buisness seller), i find Boden sells best individualy and items from Next, GAP ect in bundles. Boden tops sell for around £10 each (if in good condition) and the same for trousers, sometimes dresses go for £10-£20 (Boden sells well). I have also sold a few bits of the dd's clothes and got more then what i payed for them new Shock.

The sad thing about e-bay is that they keep making their listing fee's higher and with paypal on top thats a huge chunk of yours money gone Sad.

fanjolina · 07/04/2011 10:59

Thanks Marne - that is useful to know.

Can you take a look at my listing and give your opinion on why this Boden dress didn't sell? Did I start the auction too high?

Oh, and as a business seller, would you have any interest in bulk buying Boden/Gap/Next/Monsoon etc from me at a discount price then selling for your own profit? I have gone off this ebay lark!!
