Any advice re 'item not as described'?

I'm in a bit of a dilemma. I won a Bugaboo parasol in an auction on Tuesday. Item was described as 'Bugaboo umbrella in grey lovely condition' and accompanied by a photo of the parasol open. It looked as if it had faded slightly in stripes where the sun would have been on it when folded but otherwise looked fine. It arrived today and is in shocking condition: poorly packaged (and postage price was less than a quarter of what I paid, but that's the least of my worries) misshapen when opened, really dirty and dusty and smells AWFUL-really musty and damp, as if it's been stored in a damp shed for a few years. In fact it smells so vile I've had to leave it outside.

So, I contacted the seller who has denied that it smells and insists she sponge cleaned it and stored it in her bedroom, but is happy to give me a refund and pay return postage. Obviously I only have her word for that so I'm not sure what to do now. I can keep it and clean it up as best I can and post negative feedback. Or I can send it back but presumably I have no guarantee that I'll get my money back, particularly not the postage? Given that the buyer was so wide of the mark in describing the item in the first place I don't have much faith that they'll refund me. They previously had 100% positive feedback, though not much recently.

Any advice gratefully received about what to do. I feel like I've had my fingers burnt.Sad

Personally Id return it recorded so she cant deny receiveing it back and it also gives you a ref for paypal if you need to open a disute.
Id take it as a positive that she has offered to pay return postage (she doesnt even if NAD) maybe this is part of the reason fr her positive feedback.

Good luck

providing you return my trackable means then you will get a refund.
Keep friendly and she just may refund your return postage - a good seller would (if only in the hope of keeping good feedback)
You really can't choose to now keep it and neg her, as she has offered to refund and can't do anymore, can she?

Thanks for the replies.

I wondered that too, vicbar. So, sixlostmonkeys would you say that I also shouldn't post neg feedback if I return it and do get the refund? I see what you mean about not keeping it and giving neg feedback but it seems a bit unfair when she's described it so dishonestly and it will now be a real problem for me to get out to post it. She wouldn't have any neg feedback to warn people if everyone gave her +ve comments, yet it's a right flippin hassle to have to go and buy new packaging that's fit for purpose and get to the post office to send it recorded, all for nothing.

of course fb should reflect how you feel, so pay no attention to me Grin
If she refunds promptly and refunds your return postage, I'd be tempted to leave a neut (but that's just me)

It is a pain, but if she refunds AND pays return postage I wouldn't leave negative feedback. She may have made a genuine mistake, or not looked at it in daylight or something... I would give her positive feedback overall for service but mark her down for her Description in the DSR.

I believe if you refund someone, the transaction is therefore cancelled as far as Ebay is concerned so there's nothing to 'feed back' on - so you don't get the option to provide feedback anyway, unless they've changed it since I last used Ebay.

bearhunter · 20/03/2011 15:21

Oh do you not? That's interesting. I have returned the item but the seller refused to pay for it to be returned recorded so I ended up paying as I didn't want to risk it going missing.

I have always enjoyed using eBay but this has really put me off. I naively thought that feedback was generally a fair reflection of the seller but in this case it couldn't be further from the truth and yet I won't be able to change that as I can't add my comments!

I should just say again that the description was WILDLY inaccurate, not just a bit. Even if she'd looked at the umbrella in the dark she would have noticed the really foul smell! Fingers crossed she keeps her word and refunds, otherwise I've lost the money, the postage AND the crappy umbrella. :(

I would definitely just send it back, particularly as she's offered to refund postage.

I've had a couple of incidents like this myself on ebay. One, where I bought a garment which looked lovely in the picture, was described as being worn a few times but when I received it, it had a large iron burn on it and was covered in cat hairs. Another time I ordered a pair of 'leather' ballet shoes which were clearly not leather and uniform which was described as official RAD and it wasn't - it was a copy. In the latter case I sent a moany email to the seller who offered a refund but denied the items weren't genuine. I couldn't be arsed to sent it back and decided to keep them for the kids to play in. Then some months later I checked my PayPal account and saw that the seller had refunded me anyway Hmm.
