Anyone sold furniture on ebay?

I have a few pieces of furniture that I want to get rid of but not sure if ebay is the place to put it.

I have Ikea bookcases, Trofast storage units, a tv unit, 2 very old wing-back chairs and possibly a flat-packed sofa (if my friend doesn't want it).

The trofast seems to vary in price on there and I wondered if that was down to location.

Any other suggestions of where I can get rid of it all?

Are you in a city?
If so then go for it... actually might as well anywhere. I've seen some Ikea stuff go for more than it costs new; I think some people are willing to pay for it being assembled!

Hi I had to sell through bay, it is very dependant on your location. In Hampshire we were quite accessible but in the Shetlands you really aren't going to get the price wanted. Unless you set buy it now of course.

Plus most people have to collect so it gets more personal and some buyers are a nightmare when they rearrange pick ups and don't pay in advance etc.

Try local paper, or ad in supermarket?

I brought my bed frame off ebay Grin bargin!
It depends on where you are tbh

I'm about 10 miles from Cardiff and quite close to the motorway.

I've sold lots a couple of buggies that have been picked up but I am a bit more clued up about them than furniture.

I'll give it a go then if no good will try the local paper.

I've just ordered replacement furniture so need to get on to it asap!!

I've bought and sold quite a few bits on eBay. I have been pleasantly surprised with the bids I have had on furniture.

it may be worth doing a bit of research on the wing back chairs either to include more details should you sell on ebay or they may be of interest to a dealer
I wish you lived closer to me :)

geordieminx · 06/03/2011 09:06

I use eBay or gumtree. Gumtree is quite "busy" but its free and very simple to use, so worth a punt

I buy a lot of furniture on eBay, make sure you include fairly detailed idea of location people can pick up from. If it fits in your car and you work / regularly visit rellies elsewhere then you could up number of potential bidders by offering multiple pickup location options but you will need to clarify actual dates for each place.

mogs we'd have had your trofast off you if you were closer! It sells really well on ebay though - go for it!

mogs0 · 06/03/2011 18:13

Thanks all!!

Re the wing back chairs - my mum was re-upholstering them but has hurt her shoulder so has abandoned the project. Therefore, each chair has different fabric. Do you think I should list them together or individually?

Grumpla - I don't think any of it would fit in my tiny Clio otherwise I'd quite happily deliver the items!

One lady travelled 100 miles to collect a pushchair from me once Shock so there may be others willing to do the same!

I've bought a couple of bits of furniture from ebay, both fairly locally listed, collected myself (I live in a large city, and one of the things that sold them to me was the photo, not just of the furniture items themselves but of the house/garden they were in: was the house clean and tidy? etc. Sounds a bit trivial, but seems reasonable to make a link between a well kept house/garden, and well looked after furniture.

Both my purchases were in excellent condition btw Smile

mogs0 · 06/03/2011 18:42

Thanks, I feel a lot more positive about giving it a go.

I'm still not entirely sure about the sofa and how I'd list it.

I bought it because it came in bits - ie the arms, back, front, sprung base all come apart. It was the only nice looking sofa that would fit through the door to my 2nd floor flat after the beautiful JL one got stuck in the door while it was being delivered (not that I'm still bitter after 5 years BlushGrin!).

I did a search on ebay for flat packed sofa but it didn't show anything - any ideas on how I could describe it in the title?

Superdragon - Interesting point. My house it not very fairly tidy but there is a lot of stuff in the lounge - hence the need for new storage and the sale of old storage. I will have a bit of a re-arrange before I take any pictures. All the furniture is in excellent condition, although the chairs are at least 60 years old so do show a little bit of wear Grin!!

BTW - does you nickname have any connection with Newport?

Do say 'from a smoke-free and pet-free home' - if it is, of course! People like to know the item won't reek of fag smoke or be covered in pet hair. THis applies to clothes etc too.
Also don't forget to put the measurements on - really annoying when people don't!
And specify collection should be within a week and suggest people try shiply.com or similar if they need a courier - helps cut down the delays.

Personally I crop my pics to exclude my cluttered house. :)

I think you'd need a photo of the sofa assembled for the main photo and then ones of the bits, and maybe set a reserve price?

mogs0 · 08/03/2011 17:00

Good point re pet/smoke free home. I wonder if I should admit to having a child and running a CM business from home too Grin!!

Any suggestions for a title for the sofa?
