Grrrrr. It is linked to my credit card. I have contacted paypal and opened a dispute, will I get the money back do you think? Or will I need to claim it back through my credit card company?

what kind of scam?

If you made a payment via PayPal for GOODS and did not send a personal payment you will be protected against non receipt and an item that is not as described.

If you made a personal payment not even your credit card will protect you, and neither will PayPal.

Providing you opened the dispute within 45 days of paying and paid for GOODS or via eBay checkout you will be covered for a full refund.

Escalate the dispute to a claim immediately.

Do not initiate a chargeback until PayPal have looked into the case, as soon as you initiate a chargeback PayPal will close your dispute and you may end up losing your money.

Always PayPal route first.

If you paid for an intengible you are not protected i.e something like a website.

have you phoned them?

Fimbo · 24/02/2011 18:05

Yes, some bloody international number (to Ireland!), he couldn't tell me anymore. Just the same thing, it would be investigated and if found in my favour would be refunded. Credit card company don't want to know, they say paypal need to refund but gave me a retail disputes number to call if need be. Paypal bloke says the person that received the money has to prove he sent me goods. I am assuming that when payment leaves your paypal account, your address is not given out?

I had a genuine transaction the next day and after the person name, there is a long number which is the same as the fraud person's. Don't know if that has any bearing or not.

It's very likely that Paypal will refund you. In the meantime, if you can't cover the £749 on your credit card bill it is usual for credit card companies to put a hold on interest for a month so you don't actually need to pay it. They may require evidence of the dispute you have raised with PayPal. If they do do this for you then make sure you still pay your minimum due amount.

I once opened my paypal and found it a grand in the red. Someone had hacked into it and used it to scam a third party on paypal and then linked it to their bank account and withdrawn the money. Paypal had copped on to the scam as the third party opened a dispute and refunded them their money and as soon as i contacted them and explained my end they sorted my account out and sent the bank details of the scammer to the police. It was stressful for a day or two but paypal were brilliant and sorted it very quickly and without any quibbles as they could see it was an unusual transaction and believed it was nothing to do with me.

I'm very lucky that the scammer didn't use my credit card to buy anything while she was at it but do know from experience that my cc company are quite good in that respect if she had so hopefully it would have been sorted as easily.

I never keep my card linked to paypal anymore though... I just add it when i need to use paypal and then immediately remove it again.

Your address is given out, do not sign for anything in the next few days, the person will have to prove via online tracking that the item has arrived with you, i.e they have to prove receipt.

It sounds like you have clicked a link in a phishing email i.e a spoof fake PayPal email.

If your card displays the VISA logo they are duty bound to follow through with a chargeback if you so request it.

You should have filed a dispute within PayPal for an unauthorised transaction not a non receipt dispute.

FabbyChic · 24/02/2011 19:42

Can you check your addressess in PayPal please to make sure one has not been added? They may well have selected a guest address which they added? YOu should be able to see the address on the transaction details.

Fimbo · 25/02/2011 11:59

Thank you so much. I did file a dispute for an unauthorised transaction Fabbychic Smile. The good news is that I had an email earlier saying they will refund the money. Grin Grin
