Where am I going wrong with this listing?

It's been on three times and has yet to sell. Is it too expensive? Its my mum's jacket, she paid nearly £300 for it. It's only been worn a couple of times and is immaculate. Just wondering if I should relist for a fourth tmie.

most people bid on things with a 99p start. You can always put a reserve on it or a BIN.

pagwatch · 17/02/2011 16:07

Your starting g price is too high.the colour also looks very odd in the first photo. And laid flat it looks boxy and shapeless.

Tak a picture hanging it from a hanger in a very well lit door frame or get your mum to model it and crop the picture.

PurpleFrog · 17/02/2011 16:08

You don't actually say in your listing that it was only worn a couple of times. That would make a difference to how I viewed it.

pushmepullyou · 17/02/2011 16:09

I think it's hard to see what it's like from the photograph - it's maybe a bit overexposed. What fabric is it? Is it shiny? How old is it? Can you include a more close up shot that shows the pattern.

I think saying it's only been worn a couple of times might help as well and I would also drop the starting price. My DH does quite well on Ebay and swears it's down to having good photos and a 99p starting price.

PurpleFrog · 17/02/2011 16:40

I would list the fabric content, cleaning instructions, give a decent close-up of the pattern, and give the actual measurements of the garment.

The 2nd photo of the designer label is fuzzy - you should do a better one.

I am also put off listings where clothes are laid on the floor! But that just might say something about the usual state of my floors! Blush

headfairy · 17/02/2011 16:52

ooh lovely, thanks for that. All really helpful. I couldn't work out how to describe the fabric, it's kind of like a very small checked pattern. I do agree that second picture isn't great. I'll take some more pictures and I will also include more details.

I hate pictures where the item is layed out on the floor. I always think they can't have looked after it very well. Hang it up for the picture!

headfairy · 17/02/2011 16:55

Oh and I'll take it off the floor! I have tried a couple of other items on hangers and they looked a bit shapeless, but I will try taking one of this jacket. It's a really lovely jacket btw if anyone wants it :o

Definitely take a few pictures, off the floor on a hanger, front and back.

Give exact details of the fabric mix, the washing instructions and measurements in both cm and inches for the length, sleeve length and chest. Give a good description of the colour and pattern. Describe the condition saying that it's immacualte if it is, say how many times it's been worn and the price paid for it when it was new.

And definitely start at a very low price - items will only sell for what someone out there is prepared to pay for it (obvious I know!), which may not be as much as you want so put a reserve on if needed. Make sure you list for 10 days beginning on a Thursday evening so that it crosses 2 weekends and ends on a Sunday between 8 and 9.30pm.

I've sold valuable items and always started at 99p with no reserve and managed to sell things for in excess of £300 so it's a case of being brave or accepting a lower price.

dinosaurs, that's all fab, thanks so much. I will do everything you say... ever! Only kidding, but will definitely amend my listing with all your suggestions. I started it off at a higher price because it's a lovely and very expensive jacket, and I think my mum would flip if I sold it for 99p. But I will try again. I won't wait for free listing for that one because I think it's worth doing it again now. It's a good Spring work jacket.

Put the size in the title. There is so much clothing on eBay that it's quickest to search "Boden 12" or "jaeger 16" or whatever.

And give measurements too (armhole to armhole, nape to hem, sleeve) - people may worry about designer or European sizing coming up small.

PaperView · 18/02/2011 11:58

I would take better pictures th. I hate fuzzy pictures anyway so this my be a bugbear of mine.

DinosaursHateUnderpants · 18/02/2011 12:30

HF - sorry, was I bossy?! :)

Good advice from Ninedragons - definitely put the size in the title, that's how I always search.

Been doing ebay for a while and hate doing clothes but I've learned from my mistakes and probably tend to put too much info but I'd rather that than sell something expensive for 99p.

Let us know how you get on.

headfairy · 18/02/2011 12:44

No not bossy at all Dinosaurs, was brilliant advice. I'm a bit of a newbie on ebay, so just learning the ropes. Great tip about the 10 day auction crossing two weekends. I did find out about the scheduling trick on another thread on here too!

Yep, the scheduling trick was mine too :o
