Buyer paid by Paypal, Paypal address details are 150 miles away but item was 'local pick up only'

Title says it all really. Auction finished on Sunday evening. Sent an invoice to winning bidder suggesting cash on collection. Item clearly listed as local pick up only in text and in postage detail.

Payment came through Paypal this morning and the bidders address is over 150 miles away! There is no way the item can be sent, it's 6 ft long and rather delicate!!

I have sent her an email thanking her for payment and asking how she intends to collect the item given that it was specified as local pick up only.

If this is just a case of her Paypal address being wrong, then fine, she may now live locally, but if not, what on earth do I do - refund her and relist?

Thanks.

I had a lady drive from Milton Keynes to Cumbria to pick up a chair she paid 99p for!!
Wait and see what she says, if she doesn't want to collect you can open a dispute with ebay which will mean neither of you are out of pocket re sellers fees etc. Then unfortunately you will have to relist.
She may surprise you though, if she wants it enough she will come and get it!

Someone did this to me - genuine mistake so she offered to pay regardless. But as it was genuine and I'm a softie, I refunded less the listing fees and then relisted.

Wait for her response. What's the item? Maybe she's prepared to travel for it. Maybe she has a friend near you. Maybe she'll send a courier for it.

TrillianAstra · 08/02/2011 11:10

You wait. You don't know that anything is wrong.

Maybe she has family locally who will pick it up and sore it until she visits.

Maybe she is planning on being in your area soon.

Maybe the paypal address is her old address and she lives near you.

Maybe she doesn't have paypal herself and so asked her mum to pay for it.

I'm in NI and most of the things my dh buys on e-bay are local pick up in England he ring seller to tell them he will arrange pick up with parcel force or someone

Don't panic yet

You refund the PayPal payment and advise the auction stated cash on collection, ask them how they wish to proceed.

Never take PayPal for a collection item as you cannot prove delivery in an INR dispute.

Do not allow a courier to collect as you have no proof of delivery.

Great advice ladies. Thank you. I will wait and see if I get a response to my email and then take it from there.

Refunding and relisting may be the way forward though depending on what she says.

Dh has travelled from Essex to Grimsby to pick up a bike frame he'd won on ebay. Hopefully your buyer is prepared for the local pick up too.

All sorted and thanks again for all your input. Buyer has responded to my email and said that her niece is going to pick the item up and will contact me directly.

Phew!!

Not sure why she couldn't have said exactly that in a note accompanying her PayPal payment in the first place but never mind!

My Dad spends his weekends driving round picking up bike parts he has got off ebay, most of which he doesn't really need. It's like some kind of hobby for him, especially when he takes his motorbike- gives him somewhere to go when he wants to be riding about.

if it a low value item, dont worry. but if it has a higher value, what Fabbychic said...
something similar happened to me and it all went wrong and i am down a laptop now...

Bit of an update on this and another question - sorry!

Anyway having thought everything was fine because this ladies niece was going to contact me to arrange pickup, I've heard absolutely nothing. I have now emailed the bidder twice - at week intervals so that it doesn't look like I'm hassling and I have not heard anything back at all. Not even a quick note to give a reason for the delay or acknowledgements of my emails.

So - it's been nearly 3 weeks since the auction and I still have the lamp! Would it be reasonable for me to leave it one more week and then drop her a note to say that her payment is being refunded due to having not picked up the item and then relist it?

It's only been 2 weeks, I'd give her a full 4 weeks before dropping the email as you suggest. Otherwise you sound quite reasonable to me.
