International bidder won my "UK Only Postage" item without contacting me first for a postage quote.

Just sold DH's car stereo on Ebay, got a good price for it, however it now turns out that the winning bidder is in Romania.

I have no problem with sending stuff overseas, but they didn't contact me to check if it'd be OK first, only sending an email after the end of the auction to ask if it would be OK to post overseas Hmm.

I've had a look at the Royal Mail website which suggests that posting this item might be in the region of around £40 Shock, and I want some insurance/tracking due to the value of it.

Going to take it to the PO tomorrow for a proper quote. What are my options though? What if buyer says postage is too much?

Grr - was rather hoping for a nice, easy local pick up!

That must be one heavy stereo!
Check the postage cost again, tell the buyer how much the postage is and send an invoice with this correct postage cost.
If they don't want it, cancel the transaction and relist, but make sure you set your preferences to block bids from countries you don't post to

It's 2kg (ish). Will take to the post office tomorrow to get a proper quote.

Did anyone else bid? If they did I think it's possible to cancel the winning bid since it's overseas and send a try again offer (or something like that, I can't remember the exact wording) to the other person who bid

sixlostmonkeys · 07/02/2011 23:00

2kg is about £12 airmail

second chance offer to the second highest bidder. then the overseas winner cannot leave feedback, if they are unhappy to meet the adjusted postage costs

QuestionNumber · 09/02/2011 09:43

Yes I was going to say "second chance offer" too.

NorbertDentressangle · 09/02/2011 09:47

You could always email them and say that you don't post overseas and that they should have checked before bidding, however, you would be happy to send it to an address in the UK if they have someone who could forward it to them.

That way you've tried to be helpful but its no longer your problem to get it to Romania.

Well, cheeky bugger didn't even wait for me to get back to him with a quote - paid by paypal this morning adding £20 for postage!

Went to post office this morning - £37 to post due to weight taking it over the maximum for small parcel. Took instruction booklet out which brought it down to £19.85 - he said he was happy to have it without the instructions, but still- am a bit Shock at his cheek about it all - first not asking whether I'd post overseas, and then making up his own postage charge Hmm.

OMG if you second chance offer it the first winner can still leave you feedback.

My god the advice on here is really poor.

Make sure it is insured adequately, if he files a dispute for item not received if you cannot prove receipt via online tracking he will win a non receipt dispute.

You could have refused to sell to him stating your listing stated UK postage only, and refunded him, you might have got a neg but you might have been able to get that removed.

You are supposed to set up your buyer requirements so that only those in countries you ship to can bid.

Here is the link to set up the requirements for next time;

offer.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?BuyerBlockPreferences

MrsKitty · 10/02/2011 08:00

Thanks for that link fabby - had no idea it was there TBH, although I must have used it before as I have other blocks on it already! Confused.

The postage quote I have includes insurance for the value of the item (retail) and will require a signature on delivery. The buyer appears to be a business buyer rather than private, so hopefully all will go smoothly.

Thanks for all advice.

Even if you get feedback you can still reply underneath it with a factual comment saying "I only ship to UK, international bidder should not have placed bid". Then you can also contact eBay to report the bidder and get the negative removed.

FabbyChic · 10/02/2011 10:12

The negative may be removed not necessarily so. If you reply to the feedback with a negative comment you get a policy violation on your account. You can only leave positive comments not negative.

QuestionNumber · 10/02/2011 22:17

But surely not a "policy violation" if (as recommended on eBay" you stick to factual feedback only?
