Item not as described, what do I do?

Hi
I've bought a coat on Ebay. It arrived today but the length was three inches longer than the seller told me - I'd specifically asked how the long the coat was I'm not very tall and did not want to be swamped.

I contacted her and she told me her husband had measured it. Then I said that wasn't a very helpful response and she replied saying that she had bought it herself on Ebay but it was too small and suggested I resell it.
Well, I suppose I could but its a bit of a gamble and I'm not a seller , worry that I'll not get my money back.

She has specified no returns which is fair enough if I didn't like it but the item isn't as described - what options do I have?

you can open a paypal dispute if you paid by paypal. you will only get your money back if paypal agree with you and the seller has the money in her account.

if i were you though i would tell her outright that you are not satisfied with it as it is not as described and would like a full refund. see how she replies, then open dispute?

How does that work, do I wait and see what Paypal say and then if they agree send the coat back? Don't want to be incurring more costs if I can help it, would I specify that I want the postage costs refunded too, i.e, I paid for the coat to be sent to me and I would now pay to have it sent back!

Were the measurements on the listing? If not you cannot open a dispute.

Lizandlulu you are incorrect that the seller needs money in their PayPal account.

ALL purchases via eBay and off eBay now guarantee a full refund even if the seller has NO funds, this has been the case for over two years.

OP you can open a dispute but don't be surprised if you lose, you will also have to return trackable at your own expense.

oh, and thanks for the advice too, much appreciated!

Ah, Fabby, just read your post, thanks. What a pain, that is two lots of postage.
The measurements were not on the listing, I asked her to provide them - really annoying that people put so little on listing, just size medium, which means sweet FA.

I think as you asked for actual measurements and they were provided - AND incorrect then you would probably win - but yes you would still have to send it back, trackable, at your own expense. If PP find in your favour to return, they will ask you to input the tracking number in order to proceed. If the seller has funds in their account, or not, is irrelevant as Fabbychic says. Have you still got a copy of the message they sent you with the measurements? As it is therfore not as described.

fabbychic thnaks for letting me know that, it must have changed since i last had any trouble.
