Things do sell, but I look on it as a good chance to put things on with a decent starting price, then if they don't sell I haven't lost anything. I don't usually list things at 99p if I would be devastated if they went for that....

overthemill · 24/09/2010 13:08

mjinhiding can i ask what kinds of start prices you put for clothes - trying to work out how best to sell zillions of kids things (we are moving so want to get rid of and we need the cash!)

thanks! I will take a look,

hohumhohum · 24/09/2010 17:05

I find the trick is to look at it as s little business, so I got childcare last free lsiting day, had tthe piles in boxes ready sorted, so I put it all on in batches, all the girls clothes together 1 size at a time, then boys, in size order, that way if people are pulled to one item in a size, then they look at more , I think it pushes the bidding up.

I lsited 75 things last time, sold over 40, all the things that didnt sell, will be relisted next time.

overthemill · 24/09/2010 18:47

hohumhohum do you make enough money to pay for childcare from listing on ebay? That deeply impresses me.

I have occasionally made a few 100 pounds but only by really spending weeks doing it. This time we need a major declutter pre house move and need to make some cash as i am virtually without work and we are in need!

hohumhohum · 24/09/2010 19:57

no i didnt pay for it, for childcare htink DH and mum, but they need to see it as a "job", not you playing on the computer.

I made I think, £300 in 16 hours in total. Plus I have 30 plus items ready to just relist.

It use to take me all day to list 10 things, but the trick is to be really organised, get everything ready in advance, especially photos, have an idea of your start price, pile things in the order in which you want to sell them, use list similar and change categories and photos as appropriate rather than starting from scratch all the time, get the postage right, dont be sat there, trying to list loads and uming and ahing about what you want to sell and how much for.

overthemill · 24/09/2010 22:01

that's really good though, beats anything i've made. good advice - going to go and get everything piled up and sorted ready for free listing tomorrow night after work and sunday! Will warn DH and dc!

BikeRunSki · 24/09/2010 22:04

I have just sold a pair of boots in the amount of time it took me to list them, go to the loo and come back and check the listing. Well worth 6p of Buy it Now fee! SO yes, they do sell on free listings day.Smile

ladybirdladybirdflyawayhome · 24/09/2010 22:12

BikeRunSki, this is my first year of Ebaying properly, can I add items as a buy it nw under the free listing weekend?

Made £50 tonight but it will take my ages to package it all up tomorrow.

How do you all work out postage cost, I always seem to undercut myself.

BikeRunSki · 25/09/2010 12:53

You can add but it now, but it's not free.

I work out postage cost by weighing things on the kitchen scales, adding a bit for packaging weight and then using the Royal Mail website to work out cost. I add a bit for packing cost too, about 20p usually. It's a bit hit and miss, and I sometimes undercut myself, but sometimes make a bit too. I aim not to make a profit from p&p - not allowed under eBay rules anyway.

Those self-seal envelopes make packing things up very easy. I get mine from the £1 shop or Staples

lowrib · 25/09/2010 14:39

Some great advice here thanks. Grin

I'm right in the middle of a big sort, and will have lots of ebayable stuff at the end of it. (Won't make this weekend's free listing though).

Can anyone recommend a reasonable (cheap!) set of digital kitchen scales?

We tend to cook by eye or use a very cheap set of plastic scales which got left here by a lodger. But I've been taking ebay stuff down to the post office to get weighed, which is a bit of a waste of time really!

overthemill · 25/09/2010 17:41

is it really free listing this weekend? Can't see it anywhere on ebay and haven't had an email (usually do tho).

StealthPolarBear · 25/09/2010 17:46

my email went into my junk folder - definitely didn't last time

ladybirdladybirdflyawayhome · 25/09/2010 23:20

I have driven everyone mad here today as well as being very boring ut I have managed to list 85 items Grin

I want to list my Rolex but I can't work out the final fee if it sells via paypal for £2500 - can anyone take a guess for me?

Still have a few boxes to add & need to revise & add pictures but i am nearly there!!

overthemill · 26/09/2010 20:27

i listed 68 items and have driven all here insane - kids think i am boringgggg!

have sold 4 things listed last week so that is brilliant.
now trying to decide whether to pull off some not sold things that end tomorrow and relist today as bundles, now i 've worked out what bundles are!
