Buying kids clothes- any tips?

I need winter coats, shoes and cardigans for a 3.5yo and a 10mo, both girls. All their clothes are a bit too summery, we need layers and warmth!

Any tips for ebay? Or should I just go down to primark?

If you have time to search and wait for items to come up on Ebay, then go with Ebay,. You will get more for your money than primark!

I buy loads of my kids' stuff on ebay at a fraction of original cost. So many people over buy for their kids, never/hardly use and sell at a really good price. I got my son two pairs of really good brand fantastic quality shoes last week for £12 instead of around £60-£70 for them both....

HOWEVER, you need to know what you want in terms of not only the brand, but the particular item/style/colour in my view. Just "browsing" on ebay sometimes turns up a real winner, but if you don't know the brand, or their sizing regime or whatever, you are taking a risk it will be crap fabric or won't fit... I shop for certain brands, I am pretty sure on the sizing charts for those brands and 95% of the time we are happy.

You need to buy from me Grin. I have an immaculate load of girls stuff- age 3-4. Just need to get round to sorting it.

BNWT NWT....this means that the clothes are unworn, I would also search for labels...

Will be putting goergeous Boden duffle coat on ebay as well- DD only wore it about 10 times.

anonymousbird · 13/09/2010 11:06

Yes, be as specific as you can, and BNWT or NWT is a great find. You can make your search criteria only pick out items listed as "new".

Good luck. There is some great stuff on ebay, but also some absolute shite. Just be particular and set a limit for your bidding. It can be easy to pay over the odds. People sometimes get silly.

Remember there is LOADS on there. If you miss out on an item now, another long will be along soon......!

Do only buy from sellers which a higher number of feedback. read their feedback too.

EisE I totally agree but if you know what you are after eg the style, ie. I often go for larger size in an item we had before and loved, or something I saw in a shop, then you hopefully won't get caught.

Be ultra careful and very selective, but if you take your time you will find great bargains....

DD last winter had £90 Naturino leather boots for £12 and they were PERFECT and BEAUTIFUL. Just sorry only lasted her one year. On the hunt once again.....!

Buying bundles or job lots is a good way of getting bargains.

Look for mis-spellings, eg bundel, as less people will see and bid on these.

Also things with really bad photos are cheaper, if you're prepared to take a chance!

I got my son an entire wardrobe of beautiful 3-6 month clothes for less than a tenner, including postage, by using these methods.

CuppaTeaJanice · 13/09/2010 11:14

Obviously shoes are a bit trickier - you need to look by size and look for words like 'hardly worn', bnwt, unwanted gift etc.

SNOWBall4girlz · 13/09/2010 11:54

I buy loads for my 5 yr old and 18 month boy.

Watch the words "in used condition" because it means nothing.

Good descriptions where the seller has bothered to say if there are stains, bobbling, wash bleaching etc. Also if it was bought last year as I am sure I have bought stuff thats ancient!

Go for good brands - if they havent bothered to name the brand than assume its cheap.

Watch out on price on some items - some people will bid and bid and by the time you pay postage its not far off the RRP! Postage rip offs too - a baby t-shirt would easily post for just of £1 but some people insist on £2!

I have had some mint perfect bargins but on occassion feel annoyed as the item really was very used and have had to pop the odd item in the charity bag.

Before DS2 was born I bought nearly every item used - expensive boutique brands that people spend £20 plus on for £2.

How people can afford to buy new clothes??? my 5 year old wrecks everything!
