I've been stopped from selling a certain type of item on ebay?! Has anyone ever had this before?

I currently have a few items to sell on ebay, a mixture of kids clothes and shoes, mostly all used, a couple of things new.

I have 3 boys polo shirts listed (all used) I have just tried to list another polo top and got the message below...

Thank you for choosing to sell on eBay.

In order to maintain a safe trading environment, there's a limit on the number of times private sellers can list certain items in a period of 30 consecutive days.

You've reached the limit for the type of item you're trying to list, so you can't list any more of these for 30 days. These restrictions apply to all sellers, so please don't feel that we're singling you out. It does mean you won?t be able to complete this listing right now however you may still list other kinds of items.

If you buy to resell, or if you make items to sell at a profit, we require you to register as a business. In these cases, your limit may be increased. Please click here for more information on registering as a business.

So does this mean I can't list another top for 30 days?

Is it because they are a certain make? 2 are Lacoste, 1 is Ralph Lauren, and i just tried to list another Lacoste.

Surely 4 isn't an unusual amount to list, especially if they are all used?

Anyone had this before?

I guess it's because you sell a fair amount so they're checking you're not a business? I would think designer names sets off their automated alert system

BertieBotts · 31/08/2010 18:47

4 seems an unusually small amount for them to kick up a fuss about. I regularly see people with many more than 4 items of children's clothing and they are not flagged as business sellers.

I wonder if they publish their policy on this somewhere?

ElizabethWakefield · 31/08/2010 18:53

It is annoying as obviously they don't mention that there is no limit on what you can sell really.

I haven't sold anything for a couple of months but i have sold a fair bit before that (have feedback of 504 so not as much as lots of people)

I have listed another item and it has let me, so I then tried to list some swim shorts (also Lacoste) and got the message again, so it would seem it is the make.

Oh well will have to wait 30 days annoyingly!

Apparently it's a new procedure Elizabeth; certain brands can limit you to even one item per month. It seems ridiculous but I guess it's because of all the counterfeit goods for sale on eBay now x

ElizabethWakefield · 31/08/2010 19:07

I guess if it helps stop some of the counterfeit goods it is a good thing, although quite annoying! Grin

Do you know if there are any guidelines or anything as to what can be sold and in what quantities?

yes def brand name thing, list without the name in title

ElizabethWakefield · 31/08/2010 20:07

Ah can you get round it that way? I might give it a go, thanks Smile

When I see your name I think of Sweet Valley High books that i use to read many many years ago!

ElizabethWakefield · 31/08/2010 20:18

I just to love them, I had so many of them, and Sweet Valley twins too. Grin

Ah good old Sweet Valley High! Love it!

Yeah, the only thing you can do is list it without the name in the title... although it may pick up the brand name in the body of the description/brand name in the listing. Plus most people will search via the title, so if you want to get a little bit more pennies in the purse it may be worth persevering with the one a month thing? You'd definitely be more searchable...

I heard the higher end luxury brands started this quantity procedure. Gucci was someone I read up on having done it - but also a friend of mine said it happened when she was listing something from a High Street Retailer - so who know's! Good Luck! x

ElizabethWakefield · 01/09/2010 18:10

Thank Judy, I was actually thinking that by missing names out of the title that I would lose out on a lot of searches.

I'll see how it goes, although I have a feeling de-cluttering whilst making some money might be a slooooow process now Grin

Designer items have restrictions to so many a month and i have also heard that if something doesn't sell and you relist that this counts towards one of the allowances.

The answer centre on ebays comms page is really helpful :)

The only time I have ever had anythink takes off was by Birkenstock. Apparently they are really against selling on Ebay.
