Ebay mix up, One buyer not now replying, What can I do?

I would be grateful for your advice. Stupid as I am I sold 2 items on 6 August. I managed to get the items mixed up and sent the wrong items to each buyer. One buyer got back to me very quickly (11 August) to let me know the error and the other I chased and then they got back to me (12 August). In order to sort out the issue I refunded both of them an amount equal to the costs of postage to the correct buyer and gave then the address of the other and asked each to send as soon as possible and to get a certificate of posting in case the items got lost in the post.

The first buyer (the one who contacted me first) sent the item on 19 August. The second buyer did contact me and said they would send on (this was on 18 August) so I refunded the additional postage costs. Despite me sending 2 chasing emails (both via ebay and to their direct email account) the other ebayer has not received their item and the buyer has not replied to any of my subsequent emails.

What can I do? I have refunded 2 sets of postage costs and I do not know if the second buyer is playing ball at all ? currently they have both the items (if they have not sent the one they should have to the other buyer). The first buyer is understandably unhappy ? they have now waited nearly 2 weeks to get their item.

What should I do?

Assuming both buyers have decent feedback I would give the benefit of the doubt - buyer two could be on holiday after all. I would probably just refund buyer one and chalk it up to experience. This establishes you as honest and if the item does eventually turn up with buyer one they will probably re-pay. Most folk are decent. You won't cock it up again that's for sure!

you said it. I checked the addresses 3 times (as I was sending about 8 things that day) and I still managed to mess it up!

how can I report this to ebay - I can't seem to find anyway to contact them on the site - just to phone them?

not sure what you want to report to ebay??

all you can do really is is give a full refund to buyer 1. Nothing you can do about the rest of it

really? what the fact that the other buyer said she had the wrong item, said she would send it on, took my refunded money and then stopped replying? ebay won't be inbtersted? you may be right it has never happened to me before

the reason I did not do that januaryjojo was because the cost of them bith the buyers sending on the items cost me more then I got for the items in the first place (i.e. zero profit) and if I had done it your way I woud have lost even more on the transaction.

I don't think there is anything to report, the mistake is your responsibility as the seller, it't not your other customer's responsibility to ensure the item gets there for the other person, that was your responsibility and as it went wrong then i think all you can do is refund and move on.

goingbacktowork · 27/08/2010 23:07

mmmmm.maybe. However I think the buyer who has just taken my postage refund and kept the additional item has got to be seen as doing something wrong. Oh yes it is called stealing

I think you'll have to refund the buyer that you have been in contact with, the one that doesn't have their item. And then chalk it down to experience.

E bay is Shit. I sold some shoes to an obviously vile woman and she opened a dispute when they didn't arrive in an unreasonably short time. We complied with everything but she just disappeared apart from leaving ''received'' on my feedback. pay pal found in her favour despite this as she never closed the dispute! I paid for a stranger to have some shoes! !!! Never been on since. oh yeah didn't have tracking no as didn't do rec delivery which was detailed in my p and p info!

Firawla · 30/08/2010 23:08

It is dishonest of them yes, but if they just come back and say "i've posted it, must have got lost in the post then" then what can you do, its your word against theirs and as they are not the seller they don't have that responsibility and duty on them to make sure it arrives, in the same way as a seller had to get the recorded delivery etc..
Basically if they do send it on to the other person they are doing you a favour, as they don't have an obligation to do it.
TBH ebay could even have a problem with you for giving out other customer's addresses and details to each other, more than for the buyer who you want to report? So probably best just refund it and learn from mistake
