Sending large but lightweight item to Europe

Hi

I have recently sold a fisher price baby gym on ebay. A bidder contacted me and asked if i could remove restrictions so she could bid for it, as she lived in Europe. She said to me that posting it with Royal Mail would cost the equivalent of UK ish charges. I did say to her that my sending the item would be subject to her covering all postage costs. I have now looked into this, and as the parcel is pretty large (sort of triangle shaped, 1m x 1m) even though it is only 1kg in weight, it cannot be sent by Royal Mail.

I have checked out parcel force and their estimated costs for it are about £35!

Am i missing a trick here-should i take it to the PO to see if they might be able to send it?

Sorry for rambling message, just have never had to post a larger item like this before. I should have just stuck to my guns and said local pick up only!!!

see how much it will cost to send airmail - should be about £6.50 to europe. Look on the royal mail website , and check the dimensions are ok.

Hi Six, i can't airmail it, as it is bigger than the max dimension size.... have checked at PO. And sending it by parcel force will cost about £27 according to estimate at PO...
Am wondering if the buyer might back out when she finds out the cost!

that's one big baby gym!
I reckon the buyer will want to pull out, but you never know - you can do a mutual withdraw and get your fees back etc. I always work out the exact cost prior to them bidding in cases like these - makes life simpler

There may be other carriers prepared to take it for cheaper than Parcelfarce. Try googling oversized parcel to Europe or something.
Ebay posting can be a headache so unless item is tiny and light I avoid overseas buyers like the plague I'm afraid.

does it not dismantle?

EthelredOnAGoodDay · 03/08/2010 20:42

I think sadtobewritingthis i will do likewise in the future!

MrsBadger that is the size when the gym is dismantled!! it is a biggish mat with two large arches which go over the top, so i suppose i should have known it was always going to be a BIG parcel!

If you go on the interparcel web site you can get a quote where you put in the dimensions and weight. It will give you the option of different couriers.

I had this problem when I first started ebaying people don't realise you need to calculate volumetric weight.

If you can dismantle to a parcel size where all three dimentions total less than 90cm you can send cheaply with Royal mail. Could you roll the mat and put the arches on top and bubble wrap.
