Feeling a bit shit about visit to GP

It's taken a long while for me to feel ready to speak to the GP about my issues with food restriction and recent weight loss. GP reluctantly referred me to the eating disorder service but basically gave the impression that they wouldn't do much because my BMI is in the healthy range and I'm not suicidal. He said often these things just go away in their own.
So maybe it isn't such a big deal?

It sounds like it is a big deal but you have been managing and coping well- your BMI is in the healthy range. Unfortunately I think a lot of these services are massively underfunded and you may not meet criteria as they have to be so restrictive. Could you afford private help? There may be charities as well, I’m sure someone will be along with experience of this.

Did they book you in for a blood test also?

I’m just about to go to bed OP, but I will come back to your thread tomorrow with my experiences with GPs/HCPs which on occasion have been very similar to yours.

Oh yes, I am booked in for a blood test.
I could seek private help but I don't know really what I'm looking for. Can anyone help with this?

I don’t know about adult services but for children the priority is to follow a meal plan, eating 5 or 6 times a day with no longer than 3-4 hours in between. The meals and snacks need to be substantial enough with lots of focus on fat and carbs in order to put on around 500g to Ikg each week. You say your BMI is ‘normal’ but it might not be normal for you and you know you are restricting and losing weight and are worried about this so it sounds like you definitely need help. Could you make a plan to increase food intake yourself or with a supportive partner or friend while you are searching out private treatment? High calorie smoothies, ice cream, avocados, full fat yogurt, nuts, peanut butter and drinks- milk, chocolate milk etc are all good.

@sunglasses I've tried this and I always wheedle my way out of it. This is the problem really!

Yes I’m sure it’s really hard to do on your own. Can anyone help you prepare meals and snacks for you to eat? It sounds like you need professional help anyway and I hope you find something. In the meantime Tabitha Farrar is an adult who overcame an eating disorder on her own and she has a podcast and books which might be worth checking out.
