Can anyone recommend good books or podcasts that could help my 17 year old AN DD understand her illness. She has been doing really well and currently around 90% wfh. However has had a bit of an exhausting and stressful time which affected her eating and she had actually lost a small amount since last weighed ( 2-3 weeks ago) Her mood is terrible and she has become hyper focused on her body saying she is fat and disgusting etc. She is also really confused that only a week or two ago she felt really great and positive eating freely and wearing clothes she felt good in etc. She cannot understand why she suddenly feels so down and why ( in her opinion) she is now so fat and disgusting!☹️ I feel like we are back to square 1. She claims eating makes her feel sick and that her tummy is bloated and sore ( although this is likely pmt as her periods have returned( 3 - 4 months ago) I am of course just carrying on feeding her meals and snacks and hoping things improve but when they do I would like her to understand more about her illness so she can be prepared for relapses in the future. We are under a team but they don’t offer much insight really.

A good book on the subject of food and mental health generally is Change your diet, change your mind, by Georgia Ede. She is a psychiatrist from the US who has seen a link between all kinds of poor mental health and diet.
Her talks on youtube are generally 30-40 mins and offer a good overview, and she just summarizes the idea that the brain is an organ in the body with specific dietary requirements and when it does not get them, or gets foods that are damaging to it, cause mental disorders and distress.

Also take a look at a keto diet in general, as more and more studies are linking it to positive health outcomes for mental illnesses, including eating disorders.

Best of luck.

I haven’t had a chance to look at the video yet but I’d a keto diet not designed to lose weight?. My DD has Anorexia so I was looking for recommendations for books etc to help her understand her illness.

I would highly recommend Tabitha Farrar, she has a YouTube channel and has written a number of books. She really helped me

Op discount anything that promotes 'healthy' eating that's the opposite of what your dd needs.

Tabitha Farrah is good but they have to be in the right headspace to want to read it.

I would just keep encouraging her and pushing through, my dd goes through phases of hating her body again and then it settles. I think it's part of the rocky road to recovery unfortunately.

Make sure the food is still going in as this will be the most important factor in getting the brain recovered.
