Son 13 - I need information

A month ago my son had a tryout for a big sports team and just missed the final cut due to his fitness. He kept his feelings to himself, although it was clear he was disappointed as he said he didn't want to play at that level anymore but just for fun. Fair enough.

The next day he started working out at home and trying to eat more healthily which is fine. He has progressively been eating fewer things, for example he's settled on one particular dinner ( chicken, broccoli and rice) which is healthy enough but a bit worrying that he's restricting what he eats in that way.

Yesterday, it has become too extreme for my liking. He usually takes a packed lunch but doesn't on a Friday as it's chip day at school. I'm pretty sure he didn't have breakfast although he said he did. After school, I checked his meal account and he'd had yoghurt and water. He said he had taken chopped veg with him but I'm pretty sure he hadn't. At dinner he had his chicken and broccoli with a small amount of rice. It's not enough to eat in a day for a growing child.

We've had a chat about the importance of eating enough and he was pretty wound up but wanting guidance about what to eat. He's promised three meals a day and enough carbs and protein.

It might go either way but I'd like to be informed about the best next moves. Can anyone point me in the right direction ( apart from GP -I've worked that one out!).

This guide is good as it states what they should be eating based on energy output and gives suggested portion sizes abs sample menus. It also ensures that they get all of the nutrients they need.

Thank you. That looks good. I'll print it out and use it to teach him. We've agreed some basic rules and he seems less wound up now so is a good head space for info.
