Inpatient Experiences for Anorexia

Can anyone share their experiences of inpatient treatment for anorexia in the UK please? A family member, F12, has been admitted to a clinic in Europe. Mum has had to sign a contract to have no face to face contact until target weight is reached. Child gets 4x10min phone call a week although has seen Mum at therapy session too. Just wondered how this compares to the UK system. Any experiences or info gratefully received.

That sounds awful! My DD14 went into a clinic this week. We can visit anytime between 9am and 9pm and stay as long as we want to. She also has her mobile phone so can call/text us whenever she wants to.

Thanks for posting @lexilou985 and sorry to hear about your daughter. Wishing you all the best for her recovery.

With us there were visits initially but now that the treatment is properly underway the contract has to be in place for no visits until weight is reached. No estimation of how long that might take. I can't see how this approach improves mental health but open to hearing the evidence!

Also, interesting to think about how her treatment might be different if she were to return to the UK.

Just out of interest, is your DDs phone able to access the internet? I ask because the amount of content online that seems to promote eating disorders is scary!

Yes it does, but I’ve taken the internet browser off it to stop her researching calories etc. She can go on social media, which to be honest is just as bad.

We’ve been told that treatment is likely to be at least 4 months. During that time she will be able to have leave to come home. Initially it will be just 4 hours, then a day, then overnight, weekend etc. they say it’s important to still have time with family at home. It’ll be a while before she can have leave as she is on complete bed rest at the moment.

It sounds tough @lexilou985
I'm trying to find out about different methods of inpatient care but TBH I'm not sure what to search for. I read some promotional material for a clinic that said patients could 'earn privileges' like family visits but it wasn't explicit that family contact was denied so that the privilege could be earned. I wonder if this is the system there though?
